New member here with two S&W among some firearms inherited from my father who was retired police. He was on a city PD here in Indiana from 1930's to mid 1950's and retired as Chief. He carried a S&W New Departure 38SW off duty and later in a hip holster when in plain clothes. This particular gun had a broken trigger spring and is now in pieces in a zip lock at local gunsmith awaiting the part.....For its age the plating is in remarkably good shape but the gun has been modified by the barrel being cut off to a little over 2 inches....this is way dad carried and used it....also bbl shows some pitting and I see replacements are available. I am wondering if worth rebarreling or best to leave as is........Thanks (Other is early S&W Mil&Police which I posted elsewhere)

I should have said this is New Departure First Model with ser#2XXX manufactured presumably in 1887.

Welcome to the Forum! The gun is a family heirloom, in my opinion, so leave it as it is. That's the way your Dad liked it, so that should be good enough for you. The gun is priceless to your family, but has no collector value, other than as a shooter, and the cost of another barrel is probably as much, or more , than the gun would bring with a replaced barrel on it. I carried a similar cut .38 S&W Hammerless in a boot sleeve thru the Korean War and gave it to a buddy when I was discharged. Wish I had kept it!
