Hello all! I'm new to this site and new to IDPA, but hopefully a lot of you get to know me quickly. I just have a quick question as my first IDPA "practice" is tonight at a local gun club. This will be the first one I'm attending. The email I received said to bring 3 mag's however I only have the 2 that came with my gun and no chance of finding a 3rd anytime soon (M&P FS). My question is do I really need 3 for practice or even a match? How much of a hindrance will this be for me?

Yes you need 3. BUT Go ANYWAY - chances are good at your local club someone will loan you a mag for the match.

99% of IDPA is showing up the other
99% of IDPA is arguing the rule book.

Most local matches are very helpful/friendly and they want you to succeed.

idpa.com and at the very bottom is a link to the official forums.

Hope you went and had fun. I attended my first event a week ago. Uses IDPA rules but added some extras (rifle for part of two stages) that isn't strictly IDPA. I didn't have everything I needed either but everyone was helpful, kind and I had a great time. I plan to go back, if I can find enough ammo! ;-) Burned through 100 rounds and now I am low and not much avail locally.

Hopefully you went and had a good time. My club so far has cut the round count down due to the unavailability of ammo.

In theory, you do not need three mags for IDPA in SSP and ESP divisions (where the M&P would normally be placed). The rules state that a stage can't have more than 18 required shots, so 21 rounds (two mags + one round in the chamber) is enough to complete a stage. You just need to not take extra shots.

Also remember that it's just a game. If you run out of ammo while shooting a stage, only your score suffers. You're not going to get kicked out of the match for not having enough mags.

Thanks everyone! I had an amazing time (even though it was foggy and raining). Unfortunately due to these conditions we didn't have a big turn out, but as everyone said I got by with only 2 mags. Also I was told I was very good for my first attempt so that's always a good thing. There is a match coming up at the club at the end of June so I am still looking for that 3rd mag, hopefully we will see some before then.

I have a suggestion...shoot a revolver!

No need to worry about losing, breaking, or not being able to buy those those silly mag-thingies..

Even better, get a moon clipped revolver and shoot ESR. I would recommend a S&W625JM or any 4" 625, I use the JM model. One nice thing is there a lot of clubs are going to "lost brass" even in club matches and probably any sanctioned match is LB. This keeps people pasting instead of ratting brass and makes the match go faster. You may be able to rat brass after the match is torn down but you will always come home with less brass than you came with. Even in a major match with a lost brass policy I can still pick up my moon clip, I always come home with the same amount of brass I showed up with. Jim.

At our club match on Sunday, there was a couple who were just watching. I asked why they were not shooting ... cause they wanted to check it out. I told them to get a Glock and shoot. Would and M&P work? They both had M&Ps! - I hope to see them next month.
