My name is Matt and I recently inherited my grandfathers 38 S&W Special CTG after he passed. There are a lot of firsts for me. I've never owned a gun before, and I've never shot a handgun, so I have some things to check off my list. I'm 28, live in Texas and work as a Paramedic. I found this site looking for more info about the gun itself. I didn't have a chance to ask my grandfather before he died, and I'd just like as much info as I can get. I'm not really sure where to post my questions, so if someone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Hi Matt and welcome.I'm new also but if you have any questions about any gun, these folks have an answer.I have learned so much just by reading posts on here.

Hello Matt and welcome to the forum. It would be helpful if you attached a photo of the revolver and add a note of the markings as S&W made a number of .38 revolvers.

Here's a picture of the right side. It has most of the printing. The barrel says "38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG." I read on other posts that there might be numbers on the barrel. Mine has one on the underside, above the ejector rod. It's the same as the number on the bottom of the grip, "C 76561". There is another number on the inside, (I think it's called the crane? between the ejector rod and the cylinder) and it has an "8" with "16828" etched in.

The only thing on the left side is "Smith & Wesson" on the barrel. I didn't see any more markings, other than the trademark stamp and the "Made in USA" stamp. I'm not sure if I'm missing something though.

Welcome from Louisville. Glad you joined us. You'll get a lot of help from experts here (I'm not one), but stick around after you get your answers. This is a great forum.
