Got to shoot my 5906 and was very impressed. Next to my Hi Powers I think these third gen Smiths are my favorites and extremely underrated. This is my first double stack third gen. I kind of fell into this one. I was telling a friend how years ago I had a 659 and sold it to get the then new Glock 17. I was lamenting how disappointed I was with the Glock and looking back I wish I would have upgraded to a 5906. A few days later he said he had an uncle looking to get rid of one. He bought it new for home defense and it had less than 3 boxes of ammo through it. He didn't have the box anymore but had 4 mags and wanted $300 for it. It turned out to be a mint squared triggerguard model. Needless to say I jumped on it. He had the extra mags stored in tube socks which I thought was interesting. It is very accurate and with gentle recoil. It strikes me as a great gun to introduce people to shooting.

I just picked up a very nice 5906 a few weeks back as well. Aside from the RH safety lever going MIA at some point during shooting, I love it. With everything being plastic these days (don't get me wrong...I own two Glocks) these guns are sort of refreshing. Absolutely love the trigger, too. Plus, they pull off the stainless look very well :D

I'm with you on the trigger RDFabsRep, I love the short reset. These third gens seem extremely well machined and put together. I field stripped the 5906 along with my 1006 and compared it to a stainless Sig P220. The Smiths are impressive. They are 20+ years old and compare favorably to the metal Sigs, CZs etc. made today. I'm just surprised that these guns fell out of favor in the first place.

Great 9 mm at a great price. Need pics or it never happened. Best of luck and enjoy your new smith.

I'll tell ya...after shooting Glocks for so long, the reset on the trigger took some getting used to. I kept shooting it the same way until I realized that the short reset stayed short, even if you took your finger completely off the trigger.

I'm sure the biggest reason they fell out of favor was that weight-savings are all the rage now. In reference to why the 1911 is still so popular, the only downfall I see to the Smith is that it seems to have a lot more parts--springs and otherwise. The schematic for the 59's is a little daunting; much more simplistic when looking at something like a 1911.

Either way, I've quickly become a big fan and I count my lucky stars I also stumbled across a 6926 this week. Two more days and it's off to the range with it!

Congrats on the new Smith RDFabsRep! Stumbling into cool guns is so much fun. Your probably right on the weight issue, though Smith's alloy versions would close that gap. Price probably a factor also. Hard to compete with the price of polymer guns. I'll work on getting some pics up. Unfortunately I've already ditched the tube socks so no pic of those.
