Bought a really nice 659 in great shape with only very minor cosmetic flaws that were easily erased with a scotchbrite pad. My issue is, it is failing to extract empties two to three times per mag. Extractor hook looks to be in perfect shape and sharp. Gun will grab empty and eject when i work the slide after failure. Anyone have an idea what could be wrong? Smith wesson wont fix it under warranty because it was built before 89. They wont sell me parts either. Thanks in advance for any help.

It probably only needs a new extractor spring. Same basic setup as a 39-2, my current one was doing that after I got it. Wollf makes a spring set for the gun which includes an extra power extractor spring, a new firing pin spring (also extra power, IIRC) and a new ejector spring (replaced in the frame, not the slide). I found it on Midway's website, only cost a few dollars. You have to use their search function to find it, look for S&W 39 or 59 extractor spring, it doesn't show under any catologue headings. Installation is pretty straightforward (if you have the instructions, you have to make sure you drive the pivot/retaining pin out, and back in, the slide in the right direction). Only involves some slide disassembly, unless you really want to install a new ejector spring (mine has worked flawlessly since I replaced the springs). Oh yeah, it would be prudent to also replace the recoil spring, as well. If you can't locate an early 39-2 instruction book, I might be able to dig up a copy.

Went to numrich and got an extractor spring and also ordered a new recoil spring. Hope that fixes my problem. Only issue i was having was FTE so I'll start there. Thanks for the info. I was able to find the spring kit from wolff. Only 15 bucks and comes with every spring the gun uses.

Got the 659 all sorted out. I replaced the recoil spring and extractor spring and now the pistol runs like a champ. Thanks for the help S&W forum.

Glad you got her running, the 39 & 59 series guns are sweet little semi-autos.
