New To Me 686-5 SS

Made a trade and ended up w/a 686-5 4" SS that appears to be excellent. Last S & W I had was a 4" model 28 and am wondering how my new one compares w/the 28.

Trigger is excellent dbl action and single action. No end shake. Good to excellent cylinder lock when trigger is pulled.

Load data w/Unique and WSF and lee 160 gr w/WIDE meplat?

Oops almost forgot. Looking for a nylon cross draw holster made of nylon.

I cannot help you on the nylon cross draw, my bias is toward leather and for those I go with Simply Rugged and their excellent soudough pancake holster.

The 686-5 4 inch 6 shooter is also in my collection and it is a joy. I dig the no lock and pinned front sight (to be changed out for an XS standard dot tritium soon). The -5 is not very common and I sought one out for a couple of months before finding one at almost a steal of a price. Here is a picture:

The 686-5 is in the middle, wearing fantastic Altamont grips.

Some bemoan the MIM, yet I have had excellent experience with it. The actions are smooth out of the box. Specifically, I have a new 617 I bought about a year ago and the action was as if it were tuned right out of the box. MIM all the way...

I found a clean as a pin Dash 5 in a 4" a while back. It looked unfired. I am making mine into my new IDPA SSR Gun.

I took mine by to see Ron Power "Power Custom" a while back. Mine has Perfect Cylinder Alignment on all 6 holes. Ron set the cylinder up perfectly. I had the Chambers Chamfered, Ball Loc installed, and Ron did a little Magic on the internals for me. I had picked up an Apex Extended Length Firing Pin. Ron did not like how pointed the nose was, so I ordered a Cylinder & Slide Extended Length Firing Pin, which has a Nicely finished Round Nose. I do like it much better myself. Not as much chance of puncturing Primers either.

I still have a couple parts coming. My Cylinder & Slide "Improved Ramp" Fiber Optic Front Sight is back ordered. My Ahrends Round to Square, Finger Groove, Tactical Grips warped on me, and I am waiting on Kim to get the replacements out. I am sure they will be as nice looking as the first set. The risk you take working with really neat Exotic Woods.

I have been waiting to fine tune the DA trigger untill I install the new Firing Pin. Today may be a good time to get to work in the shop and finish on the internal work. I should have the new Grips and Sight delivered in the next couple weeks.

If your 686-5 is as nice as mine, you will enjoy it for years to come. Enjoy

Sir,

I would imagine that the most significant difference you will notice between the two is the pronounced difference in where the weight of each gun is centered. The 28 as you know has a larger frame and cylinder, and a thinner barrel, all of which centers the weight further back, toward your hand. The 686, with its thicker barrel and full underlug, will feel more front-end heavy.

I carried a model 19 .357 when I first pinned a badge on, in 84 went to a 686 SS 4 inch. Loved it so much I bought one and tricked it out to shoot IPSC stock, then bought a 6 inch tricked to comp, then a 3 inch personal carry. I have a family of 686's, one of the most enjoyable and accurate wheel gun ever produced. I hope you enjoy yours!
