Picked up the 686 no-dash (with the "M" stamp from the recall) that I have had in layaway today. Serial #AAD6XXX, has CSP stamped on the frame, very good condition over all with a few minor blemishes and some wear to the blueing on the rear sight. Forcing cone has nice sharp edges, rifling is sharp, and there is almost zero flame cutting to the frame, lockup and timing are good, and it has had a good trigger job, making this the lightest and smoothest trigger I have ever felt on a revolver. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to get it to the range for a few weeks... :(

One question; Does anyone know if these guns came with magna stocks or the target stocks? The originals did not come with the gun, it had a set of very poorly fitting Pachmayrs. The stocks in the photo are "borrowed" from my Model 10.

I believe that the CSP stands for Colorado State Patrol, since they used the 686 until 1991. I'm debating about getting a letter to confirm this, and I'm a little surprised to find a trigger job on a police gun, unless it might have been for competition shooting.

It would have came with targets from the factory..
I don't think I've ever seen anything else on 686 except the CS-1/3s..
Congrats on a great looking L Frame..

Sweet !!!!! I own a no dash 686 with 6 inch barrel and love it.

Thank you all for the info (and compliments). I thought it was targets but wanted to make sure. I now have a set on order from Midway to replace those Goodyears that came on it. :)

Most likely targets with the speedloader cutout. But, CSP may have ordered them with the fingergroove combats. I'm not sure if they had been introduced when you gun was made, but we ordered 686's with the fingergroove combats in the early '80's.

Yes, probably Colorado State Patrol. They got them very early in production. I know for a fact that a number of them got trigger jobs for guys that felt like having them done. I can't remember details, but it was told to me by a trooper that his and some of his buddy's/fellow trooper's guns were worked over by (a S&W armorer or somebody of the sort) back in the day. Of course this was just one office as far as I know, but whoever was doing them probably went to other locations in the state.

They are GREAT guns. I wish I bought a few when I had the chance!

Oh, BTW, I think they came with standard target stocks. Of course many of them were changed out to Pachs and ?

Thanks for the info Winchester62. I guess I'm just a little surprised about the trigger job with all of the liability concerns that police/fire depts. have to deal with. Of course, I' sure that I'm not the first owner since it left the CSP, so it could have done at any time I suppose.

I've personally handled three or four of these back in the day and I don't think anyone ever thought about liability with having trigger jobs on them. Lawyers weren't so lawyerly back then. I wish I had bought a pile of them. I think they were going for 250 back when the CSP changed to the 5906. The 686's were the last guns they used that were worth a darn IMO.

Baby got new shoes

Got the target stocks I ordered from Midway, great fit and I really like the way they look and feel on the gun. Now I just have to get it out to the range and see what it can do. :)

Is there any way to confirm that the C.S.P. stamping is Colorado State Police? I have one too a 6" RB and the gentleman I traded with said it was California State Police. Since we are in California it made sense but after seeing yours I'm wondering if he wasn't just guessing. The stamping is in the same place on the frame with identical lettering.

Round butt? Is it a AAD69XX or close serial number? These are all square but as far as I know. And they are definitely from Colorado SP. Maybe California got the same SN range but they would be SB not RB.

I will look up the serial # as soon as I get home this afternoon and post it. I don't have a camera at present to post a picture. It is definitely a RB and it's not been altered from a SQ.

Great revolver! Much better than the MIM lock laden turds S&W poops out the factory today. I'm a hater of the new guns. Your post cheered me up. Maybe there is a no-dash 686 out there for me.

California would be the Highway Patrol (CHP). The only other possibility I could come up with was Connecticut State Police, but they went to semi-autos within a year or so of the time my gun was manufactured, so I'm pretty sure it's Colorado State Patrol. Only other thing I can think of would be maybe a state prison in one of those three states...
Mine is a square butt.

California had a State Police from 1854 until I believe 1995 when it was merged (taken over) by the California Highway Patrol.
My 686-1 is Serial ANS96XX but I may have to take it back about it not being altered. There is a big S and and a Q inside a triangle stamped on either side of the frame.

You will like your new to you 686. Mine eats .357s all day long and just gets warm from the effort.

I didn't find anything on California State Police, so I probably just didn't dig deep enough. :o I guess it may take a Jinks letter to unravel this little mystery...

If it does as well as my GP100 I will be a happy camper! :D
