Due to a burglary at my house 4 weeks ago, I have been replacing stolen firearms. Yesterday I picked up a nice 6" Model 28-2 to replace my stolen 4" Model 19-5. I wanted a heavier frame and a longer barrel. Decent price for here. $625. I replaced the cyliner stop, as there was too much place in the cylinder. But it is in very nice shape.
Now I am thinking about getting a 4".

I do have a question. While I was picking up my gun from the dealer, the salesman told me they had taken in a 4 screw and were selling it for $525. I wanted it, but it was already taken.
I was under the impression that 4 screw meant that there was a 4th screw at the top of the sideplate. However, this 4" 28 had a 4th screw in front of the triggergaurd. I had never seen a S&W with a 4th screw there. Does anyone have a clue as to why there would be a 4th screw in the front of the TG?

My thoughts on the trigger guard screw would be that it would probably be an earlier five screw revolver...........Dan

Isn't a -
4 screw - 1 on the trigger guard and 3 on the side plate.
5 screw - 1 on the trigger guard and 4 on the side plate.

?

Or do I have it backwards?

SgtLumpy has it right. The fourth screw is in front of the trigger guard. They were only produced for a couple years, and the ones I've seen have been no dash models. If you can, check the model number on the 4 screw. If it says 28-1, let me know where it is located. I will happily double that price....and congratulations on your 28! You should check out the dedicated thread in this section.....and I can't recall exactly what the trigger guard screw did.....

Congratulations on the purchase as the Model 28-2 is an awesome revolver.

I have had the N frame 357s before. My first was a 6" Model 27, and at one time, I had 3 of the 5" Model 27 revolvers.
My youngest son(youngest but biggest) was very impressed with the 28 when we shot it today. He loved the recoil, or rather, lack there of. I much prefer it the 19 that I had.
