Very pleased to've picked up this lovely old N-frame this morning. As you can see while it hasn't been a safe queen and I'm certainly planning on it being a range gun often, it has been well taken care of, given its aprox. DOB being late-ish '56 - this is a guess based off of S/N: S 133XXX; if anyone out there knows more I'd be happy to hear.

Pretty minor cylinder wobble - less so than some new manufacture revolvers I've handled, but moreso than I'm used to on my Mod. 15 no-dash, for example. A trip to the range with a few lead rounds should show if there are any significant shaving problems, and my calipers show no problematic gapping. *Sorry, forgot to get pics, but the cone looks practically new, no flare marking, let alone hairlines or full cracks (though this is much more a problem with the K & L frames, of course); and forgive the bore pic, but the lands and grooves are beautifully sharp in good light.

From the muzzle wear, cylinder ring, and turn lines, but otherwise very crisp blue, I suspect this was an on/off shooter for a responsible individual for a long time before changing hands a time or two without being fired much at all. The grips, while very comfy presentations, are later if I'm not mistaken (part of my hunch being that if it had 50s targets in good shape, a secondary owner might've sold them ages ago), and the front sight ramp has been 'white-outed' as folks used to do for home target sights.

Definitely have to get to the range, but pretty pleased with this one. I've wanted a pre-27/28 .357 ever since reading an old Guns & Ammo article on the original Registered Magnum and its descendants as a kid, and just missed one (admittedly in higher grade and a pre-27) for almost 4k at a show the other week - call it whatever you want, but I was delighted to see this pop up locally! 😁 (And for FAR less than 4k...or even too close to 1... ;)

Pics below are as-acquired; I haven't even had a chance to clean it up yet but figured I'd share with all before some errands - cheers all!

Probably earlier. S146121 shipped in September, 1955.

It almost certainly shipped with Magna stocks.

Thanks for the date info! For some reason I didn't think they crossed into the 14xxxx range til later.

Beautiful Patrolman, looks in pretty darn good shape to me! The smooth targets are a later vintage. I just recently learned that they are 1969 or later. The reasoning is that the escutcheons and nuts are not flush with the surface of the stocks. If the washers are black they would have been produced between 1969 and 1974. If the washers are silver, they are post 74. At least that is what I've been told :)

Post '74 on these IIRC then; will double-check and take a snap next time I have the stocks off for full deep-clean.

Ooops, meant to say this is a very nice example of an Highway Patrolman. (earlier post intended for a different thread!) :o

Love the 4in highway patrolman. Here is a first year of manufacture

You have an extremely nice Highway Patrolman! There are quite of few of us that are partial to that workhorse .357 Magnum. Back in 2009 I was afflicted with the S&W vintage revolver disease. The very first revolver I purchased that year was the Model 28-2 (ca. 1976) you see here. When I bought it at a local gun show for $430 OTD, it was wearing some very nice GA target stocks (but the finish was flaking off), it had a ridiculous homemade rough leather holster, and a previous owner had drilled some porting holes in the barrel. Unfortunately, I called Mag-na-port and they told me that they could not turn these holes into Mag-na-ports. Bummer. Anyway, I ended up putting some Jim Badger stocks her, and refinished the target stocks with low gloss tung oil for one of my Model 27-2s. The 28-2 is in 90+% condition, mechanically perfect, and very accurate. The only issue I had was the cylinder pin/extractor rod tended to loosen and unscrew. Easy fix! My modest group of HPs doesn't come close to competing with some of our other Forum members' outstanding collections of Highway Patrolman and Model 28s. There are a few extensive threads here on the Forum concerning the Highway Patrolman. I'm sure that you're really going to enjoy your HP!
