new to me Randall-what model?

It reminds me of a model 8 bird and trout knife, but then again I know very little about these.

I'm pretty sure it's the Randall Model 11, the Alaskan Skinner. Nice knife. Congrats on your new acquisition.

According to the Randall catalog, this knife was "Designed by Tommy Thompson, noted Alaskan guide, in 1952 for big-game skinning. The point is dropped below the top of the blade to prevent cutting too deeply through skins when used point first."

Hope that helps.

Certainly not an expert on Randall knives, but I agree with mule packer, looks like an Alaskan Skinner. Look on back of sheath, is it not stamped with the model number and blade length?

Presuming the sheath is original - the model # should be stamped on the back unless it's a special of some type.
How long is the blade?
Looked on the Randall site - appears to be a model 11 Alaskan skinner.
The 4'' is from 3/16" stock while the 4.5 & 5" are from 1/4" stock.
They also have a non-catalog at 3 1/4" from 3/16" stock. :)

I have a Model 23 and it is not that; also, a Yukon Skinner and it's not that either. I go with Alaskan Skinner!

Mule Packer knows his Randalls.

Either way, a wonderful knife. I've done a couple of elk and numerous wild pigs and deer with my #23 and my #8 Bird and Trout!

I know this is not a music site, but I can't help posting this. One of my favorite Guy Clark songs:

That is a Randall Model #11 Alaskan Skinner with a handle made to the original buyers choice of options.

1963: I was a teen aged Army Aviator fresh from rotary wing transition training. Went to VLA (the old Abercrombie & Fitch) on Wabash in Chicago;
Bought a 4"Colt Python ($95.50), Browning High Power ($87.50) and a Randall #14 ($103.75). Few tours in VN did a number on the sheath, I sewed it back together, but could not get the compartment for the stone on right, so left it off. A lifetime later sent it back to Randall to get it sharpened and a new sheath, enclosed the old sheath for kicks. They did a total rehab on the knife (the scales had taken a beating too), and sent it back with the old sheath and a new one-at no charge! They even re-did the 1/7 CAV insignia on the scales. it now sits in a nice glass case. Still got the handguns too, the action on the Python is not to be believed after all these years of shooting it, BHP isn't half bad either. Don't think I will be cutting anything more with the knife though.
I have five kids, all military aviators. I gave each of them their choice of a Randall knife upon graduating from primary flight school, the boys all chose either a #1 or a #14, daughter chose a stilleto, the big one, carries it on her survival vest in her F-18 Super Hornet and soon in her F-35. Her fiance, a USMC Aviator says she scares him-just a little.
Oh yeah, that looks like a #11 to me also..............
