I hate to use the words "economy", "budget", "entry level", etc... to describe the M&P 15-Sport. It just doesn't do it justice.
The S&W M&P 15-Sport isn't a super tight tolerance AR sniper rifle. It isn't a sloppy mess either. Where tight tolerances lends itself to improving accuracy, it comes at a cost of being ammo sensitive. The 15-Sport is built just right. It feeds, fires, ejects the least expensive Russian steel case .223 to premium ammo.
The barrel rifling isn't 1:7 or 1:9. It's 1:8R. It's right in the middle, meaning I can use ammo commonly found at Wal-Mart and not have to think too hard about it.
It omits some features in order to keep it affordable for the end consumer. The dust cover is omitted. The trigger guard is cast into the lower & not a separate part. There is no forward assist. Not one of these omissions has affected the performance of my 15-Sport.
The barrel is Melonite coated, not chrome lined. Cleaning the 15-Sport's barrel is quick & easy. Solvent, brush, patches & the fouling just comes out. The bolt & bolt carrier are chromed where needed, & melonite everywhere else.
Standard AR parts are used in the lower receiver, butt stock, & fore end. This allows an owner to furnish their 15-Sport in whatever way they fancy.
The only omission made by S&W on the 15-Sport that I do not like is the lack of heat shields on the front hand guard. I remedied my issue with a MagPul MOE hand guard.
To me, the S&W M&P 15-Sport is a great rifle that delivers practical accuracy & then some. I expect it to give me great minute-of-hog accuracy.
IMO the only way to get a marginally better rifle for the same price as a S&W M&P 15-Sport is to assemble an AR yourself. I did it. I know.
