New to model 66-1 and coming in hot

Welcome Surprisewheeler. I have pictured my 2 1/2" 66-1 a few times here. Most recently with a few other Combat Magnum snubbies. I bought it new in 1978 and started turnin' and burnin' right away and still carry it today. For years it rode in a Bianchi #9 (upside down) but now I carry it in a Don Hume belt holster that my daughter gave me. She will probably end up with the gun and holster eventually. I'm sure yours will give you decades of security and enjoyment. Great gun.

Welcome to the FORUM from Michigan! That is a nice one for sure! I have a -2 66. Not as pretty as yours but functions well. It was a gun show purchase, no box or goodies. Bob

What makes you think it was shipped to a Sherrifs Department?

This made me realize I had made an assumption... it came from a retired Sheriff's deputy so i assumed it was issued. Turns out as charlie sherrill stated not all carried guns where issued. I found out that this sherrifs depart did not issue weapons during any of his service.

That's a good looking gun!

Another tip for cleaning a stainless gun is to use a Kleenbore Lead Away Gun Cloth to remove the carbon rings from the front of the cylinder after shooting. Takes 'em right off. (Will also remove bluing so DO NOT use on a blued gun.)

I will be getting one of these. It needs a good cleaning!

Nice 66-1. If you check with High Desert Cartridge Company I worked on a .357 Magnum load with them. It is basically a good .38 Special in a .357 Magnum case. This will completely fill the cylinders and not get a build up like you get shooting .38's. It is a 158 gr. Total Metal Jacket (makes cleaning easy). It was designed specifically to be able to shoot in these older guns at lower pressures and velocity so it is enjoyable and easy on the old guns. It was incredibly accurate in my 2.5" Model 66-1. Shoot it and enjoy it.

Looks like they have good prices too. Thanks

Shoot it and I joy it !

I have shot a 66 with a 4" barrel and agree 1 or 2 cylinders of 357 was fun but 38 was more enjoyable. Guessing I'm going to enjoy 38 out of this little guy way more than 357

I agree with Surprisewheeler. I have a Colt King Cobra with the 2 1/2 inch barrel . I shot .357 148 grain in it one time . I had planned on shooting 12 rounds (2 cylinders ) . Eleven rounds was all I could stand . Now l shoot my 38 Special reloads and it is a joy to shoot. ENJOY IT , it is a nice find. 😍
I have a S&W Model 10-7 4 inch barrel that I really enjoy shooting. It was my very first handgun, bought in 1981 for home defense..

Suprisewheeler, unfortunately you have contracted SRV (S&W Revolver Virus) and the prognosis is not good. Buying and shooting more S&W's is the only way to achieve relief. WARNING by participating in this forum the infection will only get worse. From contact tracing I see this started with genotype 58, which while rare, is one of the most virulent sub-types. Report to your local gun store or log onto an internet site immediately. Buy more ammo.

Thank you for the diagnosis! I couldn't quite put my finger on what has been happening. My SRV is serious and must be delt with promptly.

Thanks for the tip onomea. This really made a deep clean easy. I'm new to stainless and helpful tips like this and hair trigger's specific oil placement tips are why I joined the forum.
...Now if that ammo would just arrive already

Beautiful gun. I have one exactly like it but I have changed the stocks on it. Like has been mentioned by another member respondent, I still have the originals. You can buy a cloth which will clean all of the powder residue off the front of the cylinder and it will look like brand new. I often use Balistol to clean and oil the rest of the gun. These two and a half inch guns are remarkably accurate. You may just be very pleasantly surprised. Good luck and enjoy!

Put few cylinders of 38s and just a cylinder of 357s down range. What a sweet shooter. I'm going to need a lot more practice with double action. However the single action... chef's kiss

Great handgun! I have a newer version with the 2+1/2" bbl. I have wooden target stocks on mine. Love it.
I've used Black Hills Ammunition's .357s for years as accuracy test loads and general target shooting, so no crud build-up at the front of the charge holes; they run 800 fps so you could shoot them all day.
Have fun with whatever you choose :).

66-2 fun in the sun gun

my 1st revolver is a 66-2 that I got used for $249. It's a blast to shoot and although I have Auto's, I prefer to use this as my edc. I thought about selling it to make more room in the safe for more guns, but luckily my brain kicked in and I bought another safe and kept the 66-2. Enjoy your new best friend.
