I'm about to purchase a S&W primarily for USPSA shooting events and have some handgun training from years ago (ex-military). I have settled on either the M&P 9 model 109301 (10+1 magazine) or the M&P 9 model 209301 (17+1 magazine). Given I will mainly use the gun for competition shooting in the Production class, which limits magazine capacity to 10 rounds, what are your thoughts on the 209301 and is there any other reason I'd need to 17+1 over the 10+1? Price of both is the same though unsure of the cost of spare magazines and other accessories.

If the gun's main purpose is tied to the need for 10 rnd mags then I would consider that package and if the SW rebates are still in effect for a couple extra mags then you could be all set to start off.
And assuming the gun itself is the same it is just a variation of the mags' capacity then you could always pick up a couple 17 rounders if ever needed.

In USPSA matches you can use any magazine even if it exceeds 10 rounds...you simply load it with only 10 rounds and you are good to go.
With a 17 round mag you could also shoot in limited class where you can load the magazine to its total capacity....Production is 10 rounds only

Most of us use the 17 rounders in Production for a couple of reasons.
First, your first magazine on each stage should be loaded with 11 rounds, so you load it and are ready with 10 in the mag and one in the chamber, as allowed.
Second, the magazines originally designed for 17 and then restricted to 10 for legal requirements are abominations, very hard to load to full capacity.
The M&P Pro 9, 5" barrel, with 17 round magazines comes all set up for USPSA/Productiion and IDPA/SSP. FO front sight, flat back rear, and 4 1/2# trigger from the factory.

I'll second everyone else. Get the standard capacity magazines and just download them for the division you want to shoot. I shoot IDPA which limits every division to ten rounds or less and I haven't owned any reduced capacity magazines. I just load my standard magazines to division capacity.

If I could, I would only buy the magazines originally designed with and for the gun I was using. Therefore, standard capacity, not reduced.

If you're planning on coming to Colorado, don't bring anything over 15 rounds. The uber-enlightened local "progressives" have determined that anything over 15 rounds is EVIL. So, yes, standard 17 round G17 mags are EVIL, and G19 15 round mags are NOT EVIL. Make sense? Of course not. But, our governor (lower case "G") said that he "made a commitment" to a staffer. So, there ya' go.
