New, unfired 586

I skipped setting up at the gun show. I think I have gun show burn out. But I'm glad I did. I went to the local shop to look at a Delta Elite 10mm they have had for a while, and I see this 586. It wasn't there yesterday. It is drop dead new in the box, with everything in the box. This thing doesn't have even a faint turn line on it, no carbon at all, and truely appears to be unfired. Serial number ACH 01xx, with RR/WO and not a scratch on it. It looks like it just came out of the factory.

I have a question on one item on the label. After the product code there is a space for Spec. Ord. with 3199 below it. Does anyone know what that code is? I will post pictures when I get some that do the gun justice. I know some are wondering "What did he pay for it?" I got it for what my top offer was going to be, which I believe is the top value of the gun. It is a very high condition gun, so I'm happy. Oh yea, it's a 4".

If anyone knows what that Special Code 3199 is please let me know. It's probably nothing but I am curious.

Pictures added. Thanks for the code information. By the serial number I figured it was a 1983 gun. I don't doubt it was test fired at the factory, but there certainly is no trace of it now. Any defect on the pictures is either dust or a trace or Rem Oil that I wiped it down with.

It is a no dash without the M overstamp. I have a 6" 586, no dash with the M overstamp, and a 686 4", no dash/ no M, and a 581 no dash/ no M. S&W has already sent me a shipping label for the 686. This new one will probably be a safe queen, as I have plenty of .357 mags to shoot. I will probably get all of the above mentioned guns together for a photo.

You'll have to post a photo. Are you going to shoot it? Is it a 586 with no dash or 586-something? The early models had a recall (firing pin and bushing (I believe) that the factory was very good about. The fixed guns got an "M" stamp. A lot of folks ignored the recall.

Yep....you got a brand new gun that may need fixing if it does not have the "M" stamped over the model number. That will be up to you. There are various threads here on the forum concerning the pro's-n-con's.

From what I understand the 3199 is the date of manufacture. The 3 is the year and the 199 is the days into the year. So it was made in in the 199th day of a year starting in 3, say 83, 93 or 03. If the model is a straight 586, then I would assume 1983. I'm not sure when this practice began, though.

It looks like it just came out of the factory.

You do realize that all revolvers are fired before leaving the factory, and typically at least 3 chambers were used. If there is absolutely no trace of this, the gun has been cleaned and is not precisely as it left the factory. If that matters to you..........?

Beautiful 586! I would keep it original .

I have two 4" 586's, a Nickel AAE serial with early right side S&W trademark and M stamp,
And a blued ACE serial no "M" stamp with left side trademark like yours.....Love them both.

I have never had a problem with primer flowback and do not carry the gun for self defense so will not send
the unstamped one back to the factory to have the Hammer Nose bushing replaced.

My 4" 586 no dash definitely shows signs of use (bought it that way) but it's mechanically sound, and a great shooter, to boot .........
But yours looks great !

It's at Tucker Guns, in Tucker, GA (NE Atlanta suburb), blue with neoprene wrap around Colt grips. Looks like some one dropped it. Scratches on slide, both sides. One mag, but the gun is tight and is probably a great shooter. The main problem is it's a consignment gun and the owner is stuck on $799. I think that's too high for its condition. MHO. I'll see if they will let me take pictures of it to post. They should not object. The owner of the shop is familiar with this website.

That info is on the thread on the gun. The 10mm is still there.
