I just received my Model 64 round butt 38 Special from J&G Sales, and WOW!! I couldn't be happier. The gun is in nearly new condition, and shoots like a dream.

I took it out this morning with a couple boxes of medium target loads, and absolutely chewed the center out of my target at 25 yds. I'm relieved whenever a fixed sight handgun shoots POA like they should, and this one does. I carefully fired four cylinders from a rest, and only had a couple of flyers out of the black. And that is a 3" black.

This is a 64-6 prelock, with a bobbed hammer, and must be fired DA. Trigger isn't bad, but I'm gonna make it better. Price was $249 plus shipping and transfer, and I'm still under $300 on my investment. I don't think I'd sell it for $500 right now.

I'm gonna try to attach a photo, but don't know how that will work with my meager skills.

Jim

J&G Model 64

I received mine last week Md 64-5, bobbed hammer. Mine has very little wear, looks like it was shot very little and has a smooth trigger pull. I replaced the grips which were a little worn with a old (new) set of hogues I had and the grip is much better. Plan to shoot it tomorrow with a friend who also bought one. For 249 plus shipping it was a good purchase.

Real nice revolvers. I picked up 64-5 (NY-1) about two weeks ago, it is also a real nice shooter. Those 64s are a great buy

Those DAO J&G Sales revos are a lot of gun for the money.

You can improve your trigger skill with a smooth action DAO.

Been looking at getting one of these to teach my boys to shoot. Is there any reason other than personal preference to select round vs. square butt? Typically which style has more aftermarket wood grip options?

Could I order an unbobbed hammer from s&w or brownell's and replace it? I'm also thinking about installing a Wolff reduced power spring kit.

Thank you!

Nevermind! I "pulled the trigger" and called J&G. The guy on the phone was very nice and accomodating to my questions. He even went back in the stock and found a square butt with the hammer spur in VG+ condition.

I can't wait to get it, tweek it, and take the boys to shoot it!

Are there any import marking on the guns?

what is the condition of these 64s from J&G?...their website indicates the finish may be very worn...& why do they have bobbed hammers? is this the way they were shipped from S&W or is it a custom job?

does anyone know where these guns are from?

thanx,

These guns were a special order from NYPD, they are in DAO because that is what the PD required, they did this to help in legal actions, don't want cops running around with cocked revolvers and a hair trugger, that doesn't go over well in a NY court room!! I just bought one yesterday from a NY detective that carried this gun for 12+ years. When he retired he purchased the gun and now sold it to me along with the original Cobra Skin holster the gun was issued with, at least according to him. Mine has some very small nicks in the SS , this comes from a gun that has been carried a lot, but according to the PO the gun has less than 150 rounds through it. The lock up is good n tight. I would like some advice how to remove these small nicks. I am thinking about starting with some 600 gritt wet/dry sandpaper and go up from there.

Just an aside about the utility of a 4" 64. I had sold my last Rugers to buy a new 627 Pro 5/08 when I looked in my pusher's used case to see what I could spend the leftover cash on... there sat a 4" 64 security guard company trade-in - with more in the back. The salesman picked out a nice one - actually, a current model that was never issued (It was NIB - two soiled chambers!) - even had the 'Club 1852' card, IL keys, and shot case - literally, as-new. I made it 'out the door' - for $309!

I cleaned the innards, not touching the engagement surfaces, and replaced the trigger return sping with a lighter Wolff unit and the hammer leaf with a Wolff full-power. For it's first year, it sported some Ahrends wood - and made the trip to the range regularly - a fun shooter that will pop any primer. Sometimes, basics - like a model 10, or this SS version, a 64 - is all you need for plinking fun.

A horrible calamity befell my year old 64 a few months back. It got it's original Uncle Mike's square conversion combats back... was loaded with Remington R38S12 +P 158gr LHPSWCs - the old 'FBI' load - and pressed into a solitary life squirreled away as a 'house gun'. That's what it was bought for, sigh. Of course, it does get 'tested' regularly...

Get two - I wish I had!

I picked up a 64-6 from J&G as well. $239 round butt version. came in real nice cond but for some small dings. i cut the brl to 3" and cut in a slot for a partridge front blade. turned out nice. i went inside and looking at the hammer , i could see it never had a SA notch cut. it was never ground away or anything. i matched up to an older K hammer and put a nice snug pin through both hammers and set it up in my small milling machine for square. I then set a carbide end mill to the depth and width of the old K hammer notch and running over to the MIM 64 hammer i cut the same SA sear notch as the old K has. after just a few swipes with a stone i reinstalled it into the 64. Bingo! ,i now have a SA notch for full cocking. although you have to start it DA and hook your thumb behind to full cock it back, it works fine. and no creep is preceptive. not bad for shooting in the dark to just copy an old hammers cut. was surprised it came out as good as it did. they must make all of them all real close over the years. Phil

here is a pic of the 64-6 from J&G, post work. is now a 3", cut for front partridge, and hammer sear notch cut so now cocks for SA pull as well as DA. was prev DA only.
