Lunar New Year!!!!!!! NY State public schools are closed today for what is essentially Chinese New Year’s. Our governor is very proud to be the first state (hopefully the only state) to recognize this day. It is RIDICULOUS!!!!!!! Kids are in school till almost the end of June. Spring (Easter) break isn’t enough. They also shut down for a week in February. I thought China was the enemy?????I can’t wait to be done with this state.

OK, given the large Chinese-American population in NYC, I could see a city wide holiday. Maybe. State wide??????? Not hardly. Heck we don't close down for St Patrick's Day.

Amongst other ethnic groups, the Russian Orthodox Church uses a different calendar, and I think some sub groups do also. And, of course, the Jewish and Muslim communities have their holy days. Excused absence was the way those were dealt with. I know some union contracts recognize some .....other, not widely known holidays of some sort.

Perhaps being against it because "I thought China was the enemy?????" isn't exactly the best course to plot. After all, it's celebrated in Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and many other Eastern countries - a great many of which are our allies. I'm not promoting making Lunar New Year a holiday, but I am going to get into so much trouble when I bring up the fact that Christmas is a holiday designated by a church based in ROME celebrating the birth of their most prominent figure who was born in PALESTINE...

Coming from England where we were in school until the third week of July, it amuses me when somebody gets upset that the kids are still in school late June.

Jon, you completely missed my point. It**™s another state official sucking up to a very small minority. China is the enemy was said tongue in cheek. Sorry if that was lost on you.

NY mandates 180 school days Steve. The sooner you knock them out the sooner you finish up the year. Our problems in the educational system is not the length of school year

While I share the dislike of the creep of start/pause/stop of the school year, be careful what you ask for.

I once made the mistake of asking my father when they weren't in school. Seems they went to school winter and summer. Spring was for planting and the other break (fall?-been decades) involved harvest.

What did God create first, marijuana or the platypus?
Within the chaotic order of the cosmos, this embodies a certain elegance of creation ....
In contrast, policies descending from government clearly reflect the folly of man.

When I Lived in Manhattan 1960-61 I was in the 6th Grade,
we didn't see the St. Patrick's Day Parade, it was not an excused absence or a school holiday.

I bet she’ll never sign a bill proclaiming it’s “Middle Aged Man Day”….. you know, to honor the ones that built this country.

I am confused. A “middle aged” male today I think is defined as 40-50 years old. That would put them born roughly in the 1970’s-80’s. They came up with cultural touchstones like Disco Duck, but I am not sure they are the ones that “built” this country. Heck, I am a lot older than middle aged and I was born in the 60’s.

Why does everybody need to be recognized?
