Newbie needs help

Looking to purchase my first handgun and I need help. I really am down to a fullsize M&P 9mm or a (gasp)Glock 17. I have looked around and nobody around here seems to have an M&P that I can rent at the range to fire. I have looked and held and held and looked at both for about 3 weeks now. It seems to me that the M&P feels a little better in my hand, but I dunno. What are your thoughts on the differences between the two? oh it was a gen3 Glock if that matters. Thanks in advance.

Where are you located? Around here there are a couple of ranges that have just about any handgun imaginable for rent. Of course asking this question on a Smith and Wesson forum the answers are going to be biased. Personally, I don't like Glocks, they just don't feel right to me. I know they are popular, and they are reliable as a brick (look like one too) but you're going to have to shoot both to know, everyone has different tastes. Of course the easy way out is to buy both then you can use whichever one suits your fancy that day.

I sold my Glock 19 Gen 3 for an M&P 9c. The 9c fit my hand better with the adjustable back strap. I have Glock Gen4 that has the adjustable back strap, is okay and I can shot it alright, but shot the M&P better.

If you are new guns, I will have to say the Glock is one of the easiest guns to take apart and work on. The M&P has also proven easy, just has a few more parts.

Although its still a bigger grip frame than the 9mm, I've come to really appreciate my M&P 45. With the small or medium back strap insert, it still fits me more comfortably than the Gen III Glock. I used to be a die hard Glock fan until I got a hold of an M&P. I like the M&P because of the way it feels and shoots. I have still have nothing against the Glocks, and the Glock 17 should be the reliability and durability standard by which all other pistols are judged (I still have a Gen I). That said, there are a lot of shooters who appreciate the way the Glock feels over the M&P. Its a matter of preference.

Where are you located?

The grip angle on the M&P is more natural for most people. Nothing wrong with a Glock. The M&P is just better. The controls are more ergonomic and easier to activate. My M&P .45 has been more reliable than my Glock 22 was.

Both are great guns.
I at first was sold on Glock (17) because of their dependability. Started researching the M&P 9, and was sold on it, just has a more modern design and quality is right up their with Glock. Wish you luck on deciding, either way, your'e going to have fun.

Both are good guns but the Smith is American made if that matters to you...it does to me.

Honestly, if this is your first purchase you really need to fire several side-by-side. I was leaning towards the Glock before I shot them both, and the M&P just fired more naturally for me. The only one that beat it was the Sig, but then you have the hammer and DA/SA to deal with.
Go out and shoot and let the targets make your decision.

Glock's are solid. I don't like the grips. My hand just doesn't fit. M&P however, feels like an extension of my hands. That's my 2 cents.
