Hello guys,, ive recently aquired a smith i cant seem to identify i need some help,, this revolver is in 22 long rifle ctg,,its a 5 screw prewar adjustable sight revolver with a 6 in bbl and front strap strain screw. I am currently looking for a mainspring for it serial number is 3844xx,,thanks all

Pictures would help is there a K in front of the serial number there will be some space between the letter and the number?

Well, it's an either or an or---depending on where the serial number is---the serial number on the frame. Your options are the front strap and the butt---pick one. I could go on with this guessing game, but the Boss Lady rang the dinner bell---and I have to choose too.

Oh, and don't bother looking for any letters in front of the serial number, unless by "pre-war" you mean a war after WWII.

Sometimes the serial numbers are stamped so deeply on prewar frames that the numbers can be misinterpreted. Please check the flat underside of the barrel and the rear face of the cylinder to see if the more lightly struck serial numbers there match the 3844xx you see on the frame.
If the numbers match, you have a .22/32 Heavy Frame Target that probably shipped about 1923. A mainspring from any prewar I-frame revolver (.22/32, .32 Hand Ejector, .32 Regulation Police, .38 Regulation Police) should fill the bill.
If by any chance the first number of the serial number is actually a 6, you have something much more interesting that we should discuss further. You would need a prewar K-frame mainspring for that one.

Please use magnification and good light. If the serial #3844xx is correct and matches on the rear face of the cyl and under the barrel, and it's stamped on the front grip strap of the frame, it can only be a .22/32 Heavy Frame Target.
