new member with a question. Interested in buying my first Smith, .38 with 4" to 6" barrel, not a safe queen, for use at the range and some woods carry. Not interested in new ones, prefer an older model. Will primarily be shooting target rounds, would also like to be able to load it with +P rounds.

Suggestions on what model I should be looking for based on the above? $500 is my budget for this first of what will likely be additional Smith revolver purchases.

thnx

No quibble with the above, except I prefer stainless and would pick a model 67. Stainless steel lets you handle a firearm and not be as concerned with fingerprints etc.. on a blued surface.

The model 15 can be had with a nickel surface.

good info, much appreciated. The only revolver I currently own is a stainless 3" Model 85 Taurus bought 40 year ago when it was all I could afford. Not as elegant as a Smith, it does go bang every time the trigger is pulled.

actually have been looking for a Model 10 trade in, can't find them currently in stock, or if they are listed at $400. Any tips of sites for same would be appreciated.

Place an ad in the " want to Buy section of this forum, there are lots of 10's out there. My suggestions for what you are looking for would be the heavy barrel M10, M15, or I believe it is the M64( same HB as a blued M10, but stainless). My first choice would be the M15

Google adventure outdoors in Smryna Georgia, they have police trade in model 64s for $249 bucks. Aimes surplus in Monroe, Ohio has 64s for 399.

You should be able to buy a right nice used Model 10-5 or thereabouts and still have money for ammunition . . .

Would be hard to find in the $500 range, but I would suggest holding out for a Model 19 or 66. They are .357 instead of .38 special. You can shoot .357 and .38 special in them and they will also run +P ammo(I think).

That said, I love my Model 10. Not sure about +P in them, but I'm sure this group will let you know. A lot of knowledge here. Will be interested to see the opinions on +P in these older revolvers. Welcome.

Gunbroker is your friend. Search term: Smith Model 10. Whole bunch in the $300 range, some even less.

Edit: +p is fine in Model 10's.
