Hello all,
I am new to your fine forums and have already met some exceptionaly knowledgeable people. I had posted a few Hand Ejectors on the 1896 to 1961 site and will post a few here if it meets with your approval. The first is a Mod 30-1 ser# 8168XX that I believe should fit the time frame of this forum. I picked this up several years ago and as with all of my .32's it is very accurate. Any help with the year of birth would be greatly appreciated. Take care, Semper Fi, and God bless...cordell

Welcome! Is there a letter prefix to the serial#?

-1961 30-1 Began J Frame production @ serial number 712954
-1966 Change Thumb piece
-1968 Delete Diamond grip
-1969 Begin "H" prefix
-1976 Model 30 discontinued

Hope that this helps.

Mod 30-1

Hello Bob,
Thanks for the welcome you have a great forum here. The 30-1 does not have a letter prefix. Hope this will help. cordell

Hello cordell,
For what it's worth, Model 30-1, #7952XX, shipped
August, 1967. It has the "new style" thumb piece and diamond stocks. There is no hard relation
between S&W S/N's and shipping dates but this may
give you some idea of when your gun shipped.
The only way to really know is request a letter from the S&W Historian.
Hope this helps and welcome to the forum.
teesur.

Model 31

This is a Mod 31-1 that followed me home several years ago. The ser# is 8026XX and it is also one of my favorites.

Rags.....Thank you very much for the correction, I now feel that I can truthfully say We/Our on this fine forum. Looking forward to chatting with you in the future!

teesur, ...This is exactly what I am trying to find! Thank you for taking the time to help out the "new kid"........ I may be a little behind on S&W's (although I have a few) but I have been collecting guns for close to 50 years so maybe I can help out here on some other firearms! Thanks again and God bless....cordell

Thanks and Mod 36 Post

Hondo44,
Thanks for the date on my 31-1, it is much appreciated.

Hello all, here is another which may or may not fit into this forum. I think it is a pre-80's Mod 36-1 (ser# J6350XX) but not really sure, if not I will remove it. This is a little beauty, and fits my hand well with the oversize S&W grips. Again I thought about changing the grips back to original but it fits me and I will let the next owner worry about that. This does have the 3" barrel and will shoot right along with my Mod 60. Take care, Semper Fi, and God bless you and yours.....cordell

I like the 3" barrel. I have one 3" slender barrel. The HB came out in 1967 as the 36-1 and your # likely puts the build date at mid to late 1977.

Hello Jim and M3Stuart,
Jim, thanks again for all your help, it is most appreciated.
M3Stuart, Thank you for the welcome!
Here is another S&W that I think (but am not sure) fits the timeline for this forum. It is my Mod 60 in 38 special. The serial number is R1873XX any help on the birth date would be most welcome. Take care and God bless...r.cordell

Jim,
Again thank you for the instant response, and the generous giving of your time!...........Take care, Semper Fi, and God bless you and yours...cordell

Hello all,
This is a PPC that was built on a Mod 10 frame in the mid to late 80's. If memory serves me correctly my friend bought two frames that had some age on them and built both at the same time! About 1989 a little blessing came along and some of this treasures had to make way for "the new addition"...............(been there done that)...... Anyway this is indeed the most accurate .38 that I own and I would like to put a date on the frame (ser# C5726XX) if possible. Thanks in advance and God bless.... cordell

Jim,
I am sorry (and senile)!!!!!!! I have all the ser#'s scribbled all over a pad and copied the wrong numbers! That ser should read C5726XX........... I will do my best not to repeat that error.....................Take care, Semper Fi, and God bless you and yours...cordell

Hello all,
Well my S&W collection is starting to dwindle down a bit, but here is one of a pair of Mod 65's that I own. I think this one was born during the 70's and the other in the 80's so I will have to post one here and one on the 80's forum to stay within parameters. This particular Mod 65-1 is ser#1D138XX and can and has hit a 1 foot wide clump of algie on my pond at 200yards....... I know what you are thinking, but if you are one of those ............drop me a PM and I will be glad to prove it. This came with the Bucheimer holster pictured, and makes the 65 a nice carry around the farm revolver. Hope you enjoy the pictures and the bit of bragging rights (BTW I didn't do it...not with this gun anyway).......;-).... Take care, Semper Fi and God bless..cordell

Hey Jim, Maybe you can date my other 65, it may be earlier than I think SN 7D462XX.....Thanks cordell

Reply To Grip Question

Hi 05CarbonDRZ,
I really don't know, they are oversize S&W grips and not original to the revolver that's about the extent of my knowledge! Sorry I couldn't have been more help.....Take care and God bless. cordell

Those are factory J frame target grips and could be original to that 1970's gun if so ordered that way. They were usually not numbered to the gun because they didn't have to be fit to the grip frame but I'd chack the backside of the right stock.

Cordell,
Nice collection you got going there. Seems like you have
an affection for the short barrels. I like the snubs as well.
But really all of the earlier Smiths are cool IMHO.
Also wanted to say thank you for your service sir.
This comes from a "Marine Brat" who grew up in North
and South Carolinas where "Pops" was stationed most
of his career. Lejeune, Cherry Point, Beauford, etc...
Dad retired a Gunnery Sargeant
in 1975 with his 20 years in and passed
from this earth Feb. 2010 He was my best friend and
my hero. Anyway welcome to the forum and may i add,
Semper Fi

Chuck

Jim,
Again thank you for all the time you have spent helping me I.D. some of my "stuff" and putting years with the weapons. As I mentioned on the other forum, the book I purchased on eBay has been shipped and with any luck I will have it about the same day that I run out of S&W's to research....;-). Every truly succesful forum has a few members who will go that extra mile to help others and thank you for walking so far with me!!!!! As usual I am always picking up new treasures and my most recent arrived yesterday. It is a little Bacon .31 caliber percussion revolver. All of the finish is gone but it is tight as a drum and I can't wait to shoot the little fellow.....................Anyway thought I would mention that ;-)....... Take care and God bless..cordell

Chuck,
Thank you for the kind words regarding both my service and my Smith's. I am so sorry to hear about your Dad, when was he at Camp Lejeune? I was in H company in early 63 and headed over to Cuba to relieve the boys on the fence at Gitmo. Years ago, "Gunny" was a hard rate to get with all your background in the grunts........I know you were proud of him!

As I have mentioned in this forum, I have a special place in my heart for Smith's but I have never done much research on them. I do however have a good working knowledge (and an extensive library) on most long guns and have a sizeable collection should you ever have the need for information regarding other than Smiths.

Looking forward to chatting with you again soon......Take care, Semper Fi, and God bless you and your family. cordell ( USMC 1962-66) D Company 1-1 Nam 65-66

Cordell,
Dad was stationed at Lejeune in early 70's.
I will drop you a line sometime if i need some info
on other makes or models. Thanks for the offer my
friend. Proud to meet you as i am anybody who stands
on those walls for the rest of us.
You need to pick up a good reference book for your
S&W collection. Might i recommend "Standard Catalog
of Smith & Wesson" by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas.
A great reference with dates of manufacture by serial
numbers with lots of color pictures and alot of good
information. i have the 3rd edition and frequently pull
it out and peruse this fine book.
Take care and "God Bless the Marine Corp" !!!

Chuck

Chuck, it was a pleasure meeting you hopefully we can chat again soon. Semper Fi..cordell
Hello all, I was going to wait before posting this next Mod 65 but if it's in the wrong forum I will move it. This one has "fake" pearls, other than that it is a truly nice M65. The ser# is 7D462XX so again it may fit in the next forum..............Hope you enjoy.......Take care and God bless.....cordell
