I recently purchased a S&W model 686 and am looking forward to trying it on the firing range this weekend. This is my first gun so I am new to this. Reading through the book provided with the gun, it stated that I should clean the gun before using it. Is this true? No instructions were given on how to clean it.

Thanks for the help.

Fett: Welcome to the forum. Google "cleaning a revolver" and you will see an entry for a YouTube video on the subject by Talon Training. They even clean a 686.

Fett, you've picked a good revolver as your first gun. Basically you need to pass a patch dampened with Hoppes or similar bore cleaner/solvent down the bbl and each chamber in the cylinder to remove the oil prior to firing.

Keep us posted on how your shooting trip turns out. And...welcome to THE Forum.
