Hello all.
I'm new to this forum. I just ordered a M&P 15-22 Sport.
I'm also new to the rifle world.
So, my first few of questions are:

1 - What is the better ammo? naked lead or jacketed?
2 - Suggested ammo Mfgs?
3 - What is the recommended cleaning tools/kits?

welcome and congrats on a new rifle. My rifle shoots just about anything. I did however have some trouble with federal automatch 350 white box. they were not ejecting well. Just try a few different kinds. Naked or jacketed doesnt matter as long as its just plinking and having fun. Any manufacturer is fine. Usually people just use whatever they can find. I personally use Geco as i have never had a failure as long as i have used it wich is atleast 3000 rounds. As far as cleaning goes I use CLP. Watch a coulple youtube vids to see the process and youll be a pro in no time. Just dont lube it much. i only put one small drop on each rail and that is all. for the barrel i just use a bore snake. easy. The 15-22 was my first rifle as well. Be warned you can get addicted easily and up doing something like this. Enjoy. best of luck

I agree with the above statements. I haven't yet order my 15-22. I'm waiting to see if there will be some Christmas deals out there. But I will say I do own a M&P9 and SW22 Victory. I use CLP on both of them and it works like a charm! It functions as a cleaner and lube in one. Don't use too much. The more oil, the more dirt it'll attract causing malfunctions. Also, I use a bore snake for my barrel. Lastly, I saw on youtube that in the manual for the 15-22 it tells you exactly what to use for ammo. Aguila and CCI are definitely on the list. There is about 4 or 5 different brands it tells you to use. The others I will stay away from. I can't wait to get mine. Good luck and Happy Shooting.

You can use any factory made, off the shelf .22lr ammo in your rifle... just some may be more reliable than others.

The manual makes recommendations based upon testing S&W did when the rifle first came out. However, there have been changes made to the rifle since then, yet the old info still remains in the manual. For example, the manual recommends against Remington Golden Bullet, but using that round will not harm the rifle... it might just not be as reliable as it is when using CCI.

I've used Remington GB in my rifle with no issues. Many on this board regularly shoot sub-sonic rounds through their rifle, although the manual recommends against that as well.

There is no such thing as jacketed .22 LR ammo. What you are calling a jacket is simply a thin copper wash, or at best a very thin plating. In the great scheme of things, there's virtually no difference between plain lead and copper washed or plated bullets. And plain lead is almost always wax covered, so it's really not "plain".

I usually use Winchester Super X's, Winchester M-22's, the Winchesters that come in the white 333 round box, or CCI Standard Velocity and Mini Mags. My boyfriend shot some Aguila ammo through my gun and his bolt action Marlin and it made both of the rifles have really dirty barrels, which I hadn't really experienced before. Usually what I do is pull the upper off and remove the BCG and wipe it down with a rag and deep clean with q-tips and Hoppe's #9 lube oil or with a nylon brush if necessary. Then I deep clean the inside of the upper with q-tips. For the barrel I usually run a few dry patches through and then use a couple oiled patches and follow up with dry ones. Then I usually run my bore snake through once. If I use the bore brush I only run it through once and take the brush off before I pull the rod out.

Has anyone had problems with using Remington Golden Bullets in their 15-22? I have a box and the manual doesn't recommend using them and so I'm hesitant to use them.

Most .22lr ammo is dirty, it's just something we deal with
We ran 400 rounds of Aguila HV ammo through my 15-22 and my 1911 at our last steel match without a single failure.
I use a very similar cleaning method, except the only thing I do to the barrel is run the boresnake through it.
I've not tried the Remington Golden Bullets, but I've ran the Aguila HV, Federal AutoMatch, Federal HV Match, CCI Mini Mag, CCI AR Tactical, American Eagle, and several others through my 15-22 without issues.
