Hope I'm in the right forum for this question. I have a chance to buy a K-22 serial number K752XX with gold box. Pistol is in excellent condition great bore etc. with a 4" barrel. I would like to know production year and whether its good place to start a small Smith collection.

welcome to the forum. should be 1949. it is a great piece to start with smith & wessons. many people look for years for an excellent pre 18 with a box. if you get it, please post pictures. we like pictures. lee

You may have already considered the following and just didn't share with us, but if not, you might want to:

Does the box have a matching serial # on the bottom?
Is it labeled Combat Masterpiece and 4" barrel?
Is the price right for the condition and model?

A 5 screw Smith is always a good start for a collection. You have two ways to go: just start accumlating models you like or have a plan to know what you want to pursue in advance.

Just 5 screw guns, just K frames, .22s, all frame sizes, etc.

That would be a very early K-22 Combat Masterpiece. Does it have a Patridge (square faced) or Baughman (ramp) front sight? The very early 4" K-22s had the former.

5 screw S & W revolvers are always a good place to start a collection; just be prepared to search harder and spend more for them than in your wildest dreams . Good luck in your purchase decision.

You can cut that price in half if you don't need such an early one. Later 4" models are much more plentiful. If you shoot it, you're gonna want to shoot it a lot. As nice as that one is, it may keep you from shooting it much to protect your investment (or it might not), then you'd need another one!

Really like this one and it won't be shot. Also have a 17-2 that I haven't shot. No box but really pretty.
