Newcomer needs help

I am wanting to install some optics on a 29-8 performance center 44. On the top of barrel is a piece held on with 4 screws. But there are no grooves on for mount. Is this just a protector for the screw holes? Thanks in advance. I can't find any schematics showing this part

Generally the scope mount screw holes on newer S&W's are accessed by removing the rear sight. There you will find three drilled and tapped holes. Weaver, Leupold, B Square and others make bases that mount using these holes, then rings attach to the bases.

I found a review with a photo using google.It looks like some sort of cover and there's a scope rail next to the gun (included when new?) with 4 screw holes.http://edmitchelloutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/SW-29-83.jpg

Thank you for the picture, that is exactly how the gun looks.i didnt get Bo's or scope rail with gun , and that piece must just be for looks and for the screws.
