I have a Model 57 that was shipped last year. When I handle it alongside my similar Model 28, the grips just don't seem to fill my hand properly. They seem too narrow at the bottom. Are grips available for the newer revolver that would fill my hand like the target grips on the Highway Patrolman? I presume the new gun has a round butt, but I'm hoping there is an appropriate round-to-square conversion target stock out there somewhere.

I would consider looking for a set of Ahrends round to square butt grips. They are no longer available new but you can find nice sets on the Forum occasionally but they are pricey. Some of the wood used is very nice. There are probably variations on the new S&W stocks but I'm not up on those.

I guess my first question would be: did your Model 28 ship with those target stocks (HPs and Model 28s usually shipped with magna stocks although I believe that target stocks could be specially ordered)? I suspect that the targets on your HP were transferred from another N-frame (Model 27, 29, etc.) or were purchased separately from S&W. Those checked Goncalo Alves stocks were generally quite large and square...and not particularly comfortable. I think that the new target stocks on the Classics are being manufactured a bit smaller than the originals. There are RB-SB conversion target stocks available, such as those from Altamont.

These Hogue round butt stocks work out well for me. This was stippled instead of checkered. (you see very few like it) On my 625JM. Bob

Altamont is producing the OEM grips on the new S&W revolvers - and while they are pretty good craftsmen, they are apparently not shooters and so don't seem to understand the importance of having thick enough material along the back grip strap to absorb recoil.

.....X10........Those altimont target grips are 5/8 in too long on the bottom......WAY too narrow in the shoulders and mid diameter..........In other words . They are HORRIBLE.

The 57 is a square butt.

As others have said, Altamonts look great but far too thin.

I would look to Eagle for quality replicas.

If you need the real thing, try

I think this is what he has, not a vintage 57. Square butt.

I fitted a set of 1970s football targets to my 2016 Model 29-10. It was almost a direct fit. The new frame was a touch thinner than the earlier guns so I carefully sanded the mating inner sides of the grips down, using 220 grit taped to a perfectly flat surface. It didn't take much.Maybe 5 thousandths. The grips did fit OK-ish prior to that but there was a slight gap at the backstrap prior to sanding.

Before I get beat up about doing that the the early grips, the set I modified had already been shortened at the base, by someone before me, by about 1/4 inch.

Here it is with the 1970s grips.
