Newest Model 10

I noticed that S&W seems to be paring down the number of K-frame they still make. While the Model 64 is gone, the Model 10 is still cataloged. I suppose it is a part of the Classic line, like my newer production 586 is. Anyone have on here have one of these new Model 10s? How do they compare to older models?

I have to say my 586 Classic is a great sixgun, despite the lock and the beautiful yet uncomfortable target stocks. I find the lockup and trigger to be just as good, if not better, than older Smiths. The blue steel is more black and dull than the old models, but I doubt that classic shinny blue steel can even be made anymore.

My experience ends with the Model 10-10. It shipped 9/1990.


It's at the 1 o'clock position across from the nickel 10-5. It shoots just like its older brothers.

You just can't go wrong with a good Model 10, no matter what the dash number is.

I have a couple, but it was before they grew up to be a 10.

I was issued three different handguns during my Army Aviator days, and of the three the model 10 was the one I am most fond of. It was with me during my first deployment into harms way, that's probably why I feel that way.

I actually own a copy of all three of the side arms I was issued.

But, if tomorrow for some reason I could only afford to keep one around, it would hands down be the Model 10! I know there are more collectable, rare, unusual, elegant, fancy, harder hitting S&Ws in the blood line. Heck, I like the bigger N frame most of all! But, when I close my eyes and think of S&W, I see a model 10-5 tucked into a green nylon holster that's sewn on to the lower left side of a pilots survival vest. I imagine that will never change.

I have a new model 64, it's a well made firearm, solid shoots on point and has fired everything I've fed her. The stainless isn't the same as my 64 from the 1980's but is decent and a nice clean finish. I'm just of the opinion that my older Smiths balance in my hand better. They seem to point a little more naturally, but it the new 64 is not a dog in any way,shape or form. The lock is a meh to me, doesn't really bother me or affect anything

Model 10 is among the most widely used of .38spl ever to sit in a police officer's holster. It is a GREAT handgun, especially in 4" with that heavy barrel.

Beautiful revolvers! Even though I'm partial to stainless steel, I'd love to find a blued snubnose such as the Pre Model 10 above. I think my 2" Model 64 is a round butt, but I actually prefer the looks and feel of the square butt.

Other than a couple of 617s, I don't have any modern K frames with the lawyer hole, however, I am tempted to buy a 66-8 with the 2.75" barrel.

The latest M10's

At one time I had quite a collection of the M&P and M10 revolvers, from 1899 through ~the early 2000 timeframe.

Here's a pic of my M&P/M10 collection in all barrel lengths:

The most common of the later M10's is the -11 engineering change. I've owned all the engineering changes from the "no-dash" and the -1 thru -14.

The most often seen engineering change in the later versions is the -11.

I've never laid eyes on a -12 for some reason.

The -13 was a Commemorative with only ~34 made.

The -14 was the engineering change that introduced the lock, and to my knowledge there has not been any later versions (could be wrong).

Not sure what engineering change the "Classic" is, if it is different than the -14.

No worries. Those three handguns are probably the most famous pistols in modern American history. There might be more popular pistols out there, but I believe that the K-frame, the 1911, and the Beretta 92 have served many good people well and put many bad people in the ground. They are the sort of guns a person can ride the river with.

A little thread drift, are the new Mod 10s available in nickel or just blue?

I've not seen a new one in nickel.

The current Model 10 seems to be offered only in blue. The new blue finish that Smith uses looks good, but I notice that it is darker and more black in color than the traditional blue finish.

Another thing I find interesting is that my new Model 586 Classic has a square butt, while the current Model 10 Classic has a round butt. I was surprised that the new 586 has a square butt, as I thought that S&W had pretty much done away with the square butt years ago. I wish the current Model 10 had a square butt, as I don't like the look of a round butt on 4" and longer revolvers.
