next gen mags

I'm going to the indoor range today and I'll advise how the "new" magazines work out. It is also the first real test of the 15-22 since it came back from S&W.

I've discovered that if you keep the bullet vertical (w/ the base down) when you load the magazine , it does load correctly way more often. Of course, the magazine has to be on the back (convex) surface in order to keep the bullet vertical and pointing up. This is probably the most uncomfortable way to hold the magazine but it seems to work.

Holding the magazine flat seemed to double the problem of the bullets not being staggered in the magazine.

The mag that came with mine only has 22LR on it. Im so happy it finally got here!!!

Range report A+

Lone jack larry is shooting right now and i'm on the computer, I'm a loser:D:eek:

Off to the range this a.m. I was equipped w/ my freshly returned 15-22 w/ blue springs inside and w/ what appeared to be a different angle to the extractor.

I loaded up all the mags w/ CCI Mini Mags for the first go around. The mags are all replacement mags w/ both the ".22LR" and "25 rounds".

Later, I loaded the mags w/ Federal bulk. After the Mini Mags, I could tell the difference in recoil and noise but the Federal rounds performed admirably.

425 rounds:
1 round failed to fire-a nice dent in the rim (Federal). I guess that sometimes they fail to go off.

1 failed to load and did not make it out of the magazine. All I can figure is that it must have been loaded in the mag incorrectly as it was the only occurrence in 425 rounds. When I first tried this rifle, it was a malfunction every 2 or 3 rounds.

This time, the rifle fired 248 times before the misfire. Before, the record was 7 in a row.

I'm now happy w/ the rifle. I'm still not happy w/the runaround from what S&W calls customer service. It should have been easier than that but they finally did get it done.

Larry, did your 15-22 also come back with a blue bolt spring like in this post?

Yes, it did. I forgot to mention, too, that after shooting the thing awhile, I went ahead and loaded the mags to the 25 round capacity. No problems w/ that either.

I'm certainly no gunsmith, but I think there were four problems before.

1. A magazine design that would not function correctly due to position of the "on deck" round.

2. An extractor system that didn't. I know this extractor has a different angle and shape than the one I had but was made worse by #3 and #4 below.

3. Springs-the fact that they were replaced might indicate that they were too strong for the purpose. Therefore, weak ammo would not let the gun perform as expected.

4. Ammo was probably the part that made the rest look bad. The Remington Gold stuff (after closer inspection) was put together so as the bullet would actually wobble in the brass. It was easy to spin indicating a sloppy tolerance. If I've understood belt_fed correctly, escaping gases around the bullet will lessen the force of the detonation. Then two things happen-the bullet goes slower and the bolt is not sent back w/ enough force to completely eject the spent round. Subsequently, the bolt is not able to strip the fresh round off the top of the magazine.

Disclalimer:My opinions are worth exactly what you paid for them.

I don't bother with disclaimers... my posts are evidence enough of their market value:o

Glad to hear your rifle survived the first 500. With any luck you may make it to 1,000! Just kidding... Have fun with the new toy... I have certainly enjoyed mine. Time to start browsing the latest Midway USA catalog #33.

What is that? Do I hear the rumble of a UPS package truck headed up the hill? Gotta go... see ya...

FWIW - I picked up a DTU threaded barrel yesterday and it had a 25rd mag marked "22lr." I bought two more from the dealer which were similarly marked. Dealer stated he got the rifle three weeks ago.

Purchased my DTX right off the truck on 2/18/10. Mag says 22lr/25round. 600+ federal 550 pack fired, not one problem. Gun came with threaded barrel.

I saw a DTX model yesterday at the show that had the flip up sights. Is this now standard or just another variation? Mine is DTU5 that I put about 700 rounds thru with no problems. I havent cleaned it. I want to run it dirty for a while.
How much are the flip up sights if purchased separately?
thanks

You likely saw the MOE version (Magpul Original Equipment) it comes stock with the MOE Grip, MBUS sights and MOE stock.

The sights are roughly 80-90 dollars for the pair.

Bought mine late Feb. SN DTU****. Threaded barrel. Mag says 22lr only. First 200 rds, no problems. Last 250 rds, 4 rds stick straight up, jam. Ordered 3 mags that havn't shipped yet. Can anyone predict which mags I'll get?

Sorry guys. looking at the picture in the other post it was indeed an MOE version. I picked it up to look at the serial number and saw it was a DTX. For some reason I thought the MOE versions were green.

gen 1 vs gen 2 markings

i have 5 on back order. 4 10rd and 1 10/25 ca compliant. still waiting for my 15-22, i don't know which mag it will come with other that it is ca compliant.

the cs guy said these would be the new ones. we'll see. i'll post whenever they arrive if thread is still up...

I purchased my new M&P 15 22 on July 23 2010. With the Blue springs all around. It litteraly was cut open( the box) in front of me to call in the serial numbers to register it in my name. It is a DUU model with a threaded barrel. And the magazine that came inside the box is marked just above the S&W logo and reads 22LR and under that it says 25 Round.

Bought my 15-22 MOE Edition about 2 weeks ago brand new. The gun is the newest version, and the mag that came with it says "22 LR" and "25 round"
