This is my next project, started as an 29-3 Alaska commemorative that they must have left in the trunk. Rusted cylinder and barrel a little on the side plate, which is engraved 50 year Alaska Commemorative , will try to save that. Use a 29-2 cylinder and maybe this barrel, maybe not. I have a big selection to chose from. Obviously have to blue it. Who knows maybe put back original. Would really like a 8 3/4, have any around? Not for this one but have several that would look good. Now that i think of it,I have a 10 5/8. Have to do some measuring may be able to make one!

Nice basis for a project. If I were going to save the Alaska markings, I’d make it a great carry gun for Alaska (or elsewhere for use in the bush) starting with a 3 1/2 or 4” barrel. I notice you’re missing a side plate screw and the plunger to the front latch on the extractor... have you started working on it already, or did somebody else beat you to it?

Here is what it would look like cut to 3 1/2”, it’s a 25-2 that Andy Horvath cut for me. Had it reblued at Victors Legacy in Fairport Harbor. Shoots as good now as it did with the 6 1/2” bbl. The front sight base is a Weigand interchangeable one Andy milled to the correct height. Larry

I thought I had custom building out of my system, at least for a whilebut my friends(?) Jebus35745 and Keith44spl seem to be trying to lure me back “over to the dark side.” Now it’s looking like I’ll need an orphan N-frame, a 44 cal barrel and a 44 cylinder or one that can be rebored. I hope yoU guys are pleased with yourselves! ;)

Don’t want to hijack the thread but custom guns are neat. Normal S&W’s lately don’t do much for me.

Drgbike, there is a 4” .44 barrel in the classifieds right now. Cheaper then cutting your bbl unless you do it yourself Larry

Decisions decisions. I have a dozen or so barrels of all the types. I kind of like the slimmed lightened down barrel, maybe cut to 5 inch. I have all the parts it came complete with 6 inch barrel. The engraving is more like an electro pencil but its factory. I have converted a couple dozen N frames to other cals and configs. Just trying thinking out of the box. Thanks for the ideas keep them coming. Maybe design by committee like the Camel, every thing has been done but who knows I havent done a N 22lr.

If you need to ask about the price of that kind of project, you probably don’t need to bother. :eek:

Just thinking out loud here, I’d sleeve the chambers and rebore to 22 LR then line the barrel. The neat part of this conversion proposal would be the installation of a frame mounted rim fire firing pin and modification of a CF hammer to make it work. Now as Billy Joel sang, “... all it takes is looks and a whole lot of money.” :rolleyes:

PS Oh yeah, there would also be the matter of building up the extractor for the little 22 rims.

The 5” would be nice, good balance with the heavy bbl. When I did the 25-2 to 3 1/2” the other length would have been 5”. Been on a short bbl kick lately. Both have a unique look to them. When Andy cut it I wanted Horvath Custom on it. Always liked Froggies .327 with “Horvath Custom “ on the barrel. It’s tough to decide what to make but fun when it’s done. Larry

No one has remarked about the barrel, which has had the ejector shroud removed. If it recoils too much I can make a Special instead.
