Nice .38 640 for $450?

I'd say that's a good buy if in good condition. See if the LGS will take any less. Doesn't hurt to ask. The 640s I've shot seemed to have smoother DA trigger pulls than most other j frames.

If it is mechanically sound, yes, that would be a good buy if you want a stainless J-frame in 38 Special. These are perfectly safe for +P ammo.

That would be a buy now if you want it or need it but asking means to me that you aren't that interested or haven't been looking for that model. I know - because I have a buddy that buys everything he sees with no explanation, and sticks them in a safe never to see the light of day. Something to think about…

Most of my Smith and Wessons have been "stumble upon" purchases. Only rarely have I gone looking for a specific model.

That's a good price. If it is in good condition, hurry up and buy it before someone else buys it. I bought a used 640 .38 special a few years ago. It's significantly more enjoyable to shoot than an airweight. I didn't want to buy a new 640, since the new ones have the lock and use the longer magnum barrel.

Good price. Unless the revolver has been "fluffed and buffed" to look new (you can spot that), you have a winner. Earlier 640's in .38 Spl are the best IMO.

I agree about the "non magnum" 640s being more desirable. I have a 640 Pro and IMHO it's really too large and heavy for pocket carry. My pocket revolver of choice is a 649 "no dash" but a I would grab a "non magnum" 640 as I hear the DA trigger is better. They are pretty hard to come by around here.

If it has a CEN prefix serial number and marked "tested for +P+" on the inside of the frame, you definitely want to get it ASAP!! It won't be there long at that price. I have one with serial #CEN 45XX with the "tested for +P+" marking.
