Nice little find.

I am in no way an expert on finishes used on M29s of any era, but personally I have seen very few factory nickeled examples. I have no idea just how common (or uncommon) a nickel finish is on a 29. Does anyone know? I have a 29-3 which is nickeled. For awhile, I didn't particularly like the nickel finish, but it grows on you.

I have very few Nickle revolvers but as of late they are growing on me as well. This is one of the nicest examples of factory Nickle finish I have seen.

Also in my opinion Nickle guns don't get the use that the blued guns do.

My 29-2 is nickel as well. Open the cylinder and as if you were loading rounds into the cylinder look for an N on the face. If there is an N then it is factory nickel.

I have seen educated guesses by some of the most knowledgeable folks here that the percentage of S&W production was about ten percent. I know that they were a lot more popular in some regions of the country than others. In the west, the share of nickel S&W guns I see is way less than that.

I have had several 29's and 57's in nickel-- one 83/8ths I wore out completely. Always liked the finish myself. Smooth targets or Ivory was my choice of stocks. :) This was one:

George, I wouldn't chime in here except our stories are quite similar.

My LGS guy called me, also.

Said basically the same thing. "I have something you might want to see."
Now comes the part from the Twilight Zone.

Original receipt.

1977 gun

Nickel Model 29-2

In the original case with all the goodies.

Pretty spooky.

My LGS guy showed me the gun. Said I would buy it. While he was calling me in, I pulled the tray up and out only to find all the goodies, the receipt, and, the unused original stocks. The person that bought the gun purchased some aftermarket stocks the same day. I found all these goodies and my LGS guy didn't even know they were in there. Ha.:D

I think the N frame nickel guns are quite a prize. Beautiful pieces of art.:)

Enjoy yours as I enjoy mine,

Outstanding!! I'll post more pictures tomorrow as well as the serial number. Yours is gorgeous!

N71565, shipped in March 1973. click on the photo for a better look. If a model was cataloged in blue and nickel, nickel usually made up about 10-15 percent of the production. In 1956, only seven 44 Magnums with a nickel finish are known of the 3000 plus produced.
