I am considering adopting this 586. It's in nice shape. Maybe 90% (these photos were taken in the wild with no wipe down. Most of what you see are smudges).

It wears a pair of Herrett Shooting Stars and comes with a decent leather holster, but no box, tools or paperwork.

What would you pay?

Regrettably, I cannot answer your question, as I believe values differ from area to area, perhaps significantly. If after close inspection for all the usual mechanical matters of carry up, end shake, push off etc. etc. you still find desirable, I can encourage you to pursue it. if you chose, you could even give it a light polish with some Flitz or another ultrafine grit polish, perhaps with a bit of wax afterwards.

I assure you my similar 586 nickel four-inch is a fine piece of hardware.

Wishing you best of luck.

$650-750-ish...with original targets maybe $800 or more to the guy who is crazy for nickle...I've a blue one anib ...paid $750 a few yrs ago-it is mint...they're out there. That's a decent nickle model and Herret'a are nice but $750 max for me but I'd offer $600 1st and go from there.

Bullet Bob, This one is down east. Way too far for you to travel. :D

I haven't stated the sellers asking price because I find forum members tend to be enablers (no offence). If I tell the forum what the price tag is, they usually say things like, "that's not too much, it's just early". If I ask what it's worth, I feel like I get better feedback.

For now, I say the prices coming forward are comparable to the sellers asking price.

I actually thought it was a better deal than it sounds like it is.

The nickel appears to show wear at the muzzle and the Herret's Shooting Star stocks, although super comfy in my hands, are not original. Yep, I'd say $700 would be a fair price, I would not go beyond $800 given it's condition.

I would have thought 600, but I have lost touch with the market. Certainly no more than 700? What are new 686s going for 8-900?

Last ones I saw sell were in 98% or better condition; a blue 4 inch for $900 and a nickel 4 inch for $1000, both had correct target stocks but no box/papers. This was two years ago. Have seen some offered for considerably more but don't know if they sold. Better pictures would help but from what I can see $700, maybe a little more, would be about what I'd expect where I shop. Probably tagged higher but sell for that. Guns are slowing down a bit now; lots of inventory in the shops and more coming through the door every day. Not many S&Ws yet but I think they're coming if the economy continues to sour.

The seller is asking $800. I think I can get it for a bit lower, but, although the consensus here is that his asking price is a bit high, I'll probably bring it home.

I don't see these everyday here, and I don't have a nickel gun (yet).

I'll let you know what happens.

But those guys are balanced by the people who say "I just bought one of those for twenty dollars two years ago". :D

Hope you get it, I'd like to pay around $600-650.00 for one in that condition.

Hope you like'm shiny

Well, I ended up overpaying (based on the feedback here). $800 out the door was the best I could do with the Herrett Shooting Stars, a leather holster and a half box of ammo.

Like I've already said, these dont show up here everyday.

I've spent a little time polishing it with flitz and will probably polish it some more before hitting it with a few coats of RenWax, but I wanted to post an update.

I threw a set of period correct targets on it because I know you like them original. What do you think?

To the OP, I think you did very well. In my travels after purchasing mine in 1993 for just over $300, essentially new, I have seen very few 586 nickel. They are a beautiful firearm.

Congratulations to you for that simpatico polish (and upcoming wax) job and the good looking, period targets. Exactly the style that came on mine.

Hope it will serve you well for many years and with great pleasure.

"..because I know you like them original."

For shooting I like the Herrett's much more than target grips made after the late 60's.

Nice gun, I'll bet you'll love shooting it.

OP i think you got a beautiful gun at a very fair price. The used gun market has been inflated since the purchasing craze of the last few years. Prices have started to back-off recently, but I don't every see them returning to before the craziness started.

I say shoot and enjoy you new firearm. That's what it's all about.

Ooo...NICE! If you're satisfied, that's all that matters.i

Sounds like an exceptionally good deal to me. I don't ever see the kind of prices that are suggested as average on this forum for good used guns. If I was to see guns for what others on here say is a going price I would be well on my way to filling my 3rd gun safe.

586 no dash?
Price is ok. I paid more for an '84 blue ND.
What year was it made?
Looks very nice!!!

I think:

1. After looking at your excellent photos I need to hit my nickel revolvers with some Flitz. Your revolver looks great.

2. The price you paid was very good compared to what I've seen.

Congrats.

You did good. Traditionally this place tends to low ball values compared to what I see at gun shops and online auction sell prices.

I said I would not go over $800 given it's as-listed condition. I sure looks like it cleaned up really well. Post-clean up, I'd say you did well for $800 and really well with the Flitz.

this is a low price for what it is and given you had the correct grips laying around. Now please stop flitzing on it before you polish through

Oysterer, I'll take your advice. I've been working it with my finger and I think there is still plenty of finish left, but don't see a need in pushing it too far. I'll switch to RenWax now.:D
