Nickel HP

I need some help on a Highway Patrolman. Other than the 25 with 5" barrels ordered by the Florida Highway Patrol in 1959, were there any nickel plated Model 28 no dash revolvers shipped? The one I'm looking at has a 1958 serial number (S181xxx). It looks pretty clean, but I'm wondering about the finish. No box, so there is not any help there.

Add on: the trigger and hammer still show case colors. The extractor star is blue. But in the pics I have, I cannot see an N on the rear face of the cylinder. I also do not see a serial number in that location (but I don't know whether on an N frame I should).

If I remember correctly the others were 4" dash 2s in brushed nickel. Someone more sure should be along.

There's five that were reported to be special order in brushed nickel. Sorry but I don't have a serial number range of those.

Jack...The Model 28s with a nickel finish are serial numbered in the S189000 to S192000 range. These are the only ones reported, but there can always be others (need a letter here). S&W did not offer a change of finish on this model, so if the finish is not original, it was done outside of S&W.

Were these M28s or M28-2s?

In the range Bill quoted, they would be Model 28, with no dash. The dash 1 came along in 1960, with the thread change on the extractor rod, and the dash 2 was the advent of the three screw frame in 1962.

Bill. I'm inclined to think, at this point, that this is the original finish on this revolver, even though it is earlier than the range you supplied. I am checking to confirm this, but I think there is a capital N stamped both on the rear face of the cylinder and on the left side of the grip frame.

I do think this revolver should be lettered.

I sent a blue one back a couple of years ago
They brushed nickeled it for me.
