I am primarily a Colt collector so I need to ask the experts about this one. I have a chance to buy a Nickel finish Model 29-2, 8 3/8" in display case with all original packaging (SN# N624XXX). essentially a time capsule. What do the experts think it's worth? Does anyone know the year of manufacture?

I have a27-2 sister gun in 8 3/8 year 1973 same box never shot I got it as a trade but I think mine is worth $1200 I have a nickel 29-2 in 6" box and papers about $1500 . Personally I care less because I'm not selling, for you consider the following they are not making pinned and recessed anymore. Quality weapon for short or long time investment, or hand me down to family!?!

My 02

The revolver was probably made in 1979 according to the SCSW. I have a blued model that is a few years older than this one.

Gotta think this one with all the original packaging should be worth $1200.00 to $1500.00 .

What's it worth...

The gun you have with all the goodies in great condition is worth way more than just the gun. The only negative is the 8 3/8" barrel which is the least popular. How much you can sell it for depends on your sales and marketing skills. You'll get the most gross dollars for it if you place it with a Gun Broker seller like noconeetrader or GunAuction with Jackthedog. The reason is these two guys have tremendous reputations for complete honesty and GREAT pix. Because of their reputations they attract lots of bidders. Do some research on completed auctions and you'll have a good idea.

I WOULD LIST IT ON GUN BROKER, WITH A STARTING PRICE OF $1,499.--NO RESERVE AND NO BUY NOW PRICE. POST MANY GREAT PICS, SHOWING DETAIL. LET THE AUCTION RENEW ITSELF, IF IT DOESN'T SELL IN A WEEK. THERE IS NO TELLING WHERE THAT AUCTION WILL END UP. I LOOK AT 8 3/8" S&Ws ALL THE TIME, AND I CANT RECALL SEEING A NICER PACKAGE. SOMEONE WILL WANT IT. GOOD LUCK………...

Interesting. I've considered selling off some of my S&W collection on gunbroker. I'm an excellent photographer but I'm not an FFL or other gun pro. I've never considered using an intermediary on gunbroker. Seems obvious now that you mention it but never occurred to me.

That would add to costs. Paying the seller. Paying for shipment twice basically. But if you get more money for the gun... I can see that.

Don't take less than $1000 for it. You can get more if you do as others have advised.

The 8 3/8" Barrel is not as sought after as some of the Shorter Barrel lengths. But a S&W Model 29 in that nice of a condition and with all of the accoutrements is still VERY collectible.

The right collector looking to complete their collection or add one to the collection will pay top dollar.

You don't find mint condition 29s with all the case, and the shipping box.

Nice find on your part.

I thought you were selling, my bad.

You are buying.

What is the asking price?

If they are asking $1000 or less, it is a steal.

up to $1200 or so, its a good buy.

More than that, I personally would spend on something else, as 8 3/8" Barreled guns are not my thing.

This is my 'time capsule'. The stocks are original, but, haven't been on the gun until I purchased it. They were in the bottom under the tray with the original receipt and all the 'goodies'. The gun appears to be unfired after leaving the factory.
If you can read the receipt the gentleman that purchased this fine specimen paid a princely sum of $268.00 on January 29,1977. He also bought two holsters and a set of stocks. Anyone want to fathom a guess on how much time this one spent in a holster?
Having said all that I would not consider, with today's market prices, starting out at anything less than the aforementioned price of $1,500.00. Maybe more. Really. In my opinion, this is as good as it gets in the arena of Model 29-2's. :)

Enjoy,

P.S. Decent pictures, and many of them, will enhance the seller's ability to stimulate the potential buyers.

Thank you all for your input. All of it was very helpful. The seller bought the gun new. He claims to have fired 12 44 specials through it and 3 magnums. As I said in my original post, I am a Colt collector so I don't know what features, models and years are the most sought after. He has not set a price yet.

Certainly a gun in this condition would grab anyone's attention, however, I learned long ago not to be dazzled by the bright lights and distracted by shiny objects. Thats how you end up a victim Vs. a collector. I know that serious collectors are looking for certain features that I know nothing about when it comes to S&W's. That's why I came to the experts

Thanks again for the help
