I just thought I would give everyone a heads-up that there is a nickel 4-screw Model 29 S199xxx w/ a 6.5" bbl on Gunbroker with a current bid of $495 no reserve. Unfortunately it has aftermarket grips and doesn't come with a box, but it still may end up being a good deal when the auction is over. I would be interested myself, but the funds are running a little low right now.

That's a refin...the dead giveaway is the loss of sharpness in the lettering. The recessed areas get filled up with the nickel plating.

From what I have been told, S&W would have to change the tolerances on the the machines when they did a nickel gun. The plating adds just enough extra thickness to where the machines had to be adjusted.

Thanks for the heads up though.

After taking a second look, I think you are right. At first I was distracted by the poor quality of the photos.

Since it is a refin is that "bad"? Looks nice and is going for a decent price...I am just looking for a shooter so would it be good for that? Thanks

I think the nickel plated hammer and trigger is a dead give-a-way.

So is this gun worth 475.00 or not??? Just wanting a shooter so would it be good or not..Please help as I am new to these handguns and dont want to make a bad purchase. Thanks

NOT! Hold out for one that has not been refinished. Also, remember that in addition to reducing the value of a gun, refinishing is also almost always done to hide something. The gun was probably not well-cared for.
