Nickle Mod 27

Can anyone tell me if M27 (no dash) where ever shipped in a nickle finish, or when the factory first started to offer the M27 in a nickle finish.

Yes the my were. Is the front sight blue or nickel? Should be nickel on an original nickel gun

Actually Kris, that is incorrect or a typo...especially based on your Avatar

OP, the N-frame 357 was offered in nickel through out its life starting from the pre models and going up through the dash series until probably the late 70's early 80's

On a pre model up through the last of the S prefix numbers guns a factory nickel gun will have blue front and rear sights as well as a blue ejector star. It may have an "N" on the face of the cylinder and it will have an "N" on one side of the grip frame. On almost every nickel gun I have seen with a blue front sight the sight ramp pins are proud.

Probably somewhere about the time the N prefix took over they started nickeling the front sight and ejector (I think).

I have seen a few guns as I have described that actually shipped as blued guns and were sent to the Factory to be nickeled which the Factory did in the style of the day. That would be indicated by an "R-N" mark on the side of the grip frame.

I'm now the proud owner of a nickle 27, 6". While trolling Armslit I came across an N frame with a set of Diamond Magnas that I was looking for to fit to my blued 1965 27-2. I thought I'd buy the gun, swap the grips out and move on.
The gun was advertised as a S&W .357 for $550, included were about 100 rounds of .38s and .357s.
After viewing the gun I was shocked to see that it was a beautiful 6" M27 with an early 61 number, the grips were original and numbered to the frame. No box or papers, just a great price.
The finish was pretty good overall, no pitting, just a few scuffs here and there. lots of fine scratches from cleaning/polishing. All in all a great piece.
Needless to say my 27-2 is still looking for some grips as there is no way I'm going to split up an original pair.

As 29aholic said, my 27 has blued sights and ejector star, and yes, pins are proud.
