How long is the "proceed" good for? Could one purchase another firearm 5 days later under the same "proceed" or does each purchase require a separate NICS?

In Illinois the approval is for 30 days. You may add another gun if you have not picked up and signed the 4473 for the original gun the approval was for with the following requirements: if the original approval was for a handgun you may add a handgun or long gun. If the approval was for a long gun you may add another long gun but not a hand gun.

Under federal law you have to do a new paper for another purchase. I'm not sure how it is handled in those states that have chosen to do the checks themselves (some exempt carry permit holders I believe). I suspect the feds figure you could get in trouble between purchases and change your status. Be aware that if you buy two handguns from the same dealer within five business days they are required to notify the ATF and local law enforcement. Supposedly this is to help catch illegal traffickers though I doubt if it ever does.

In NY you would need to do a new NICS and a new 4473 for the seperate purchases, it could not be added to the first 4473 or NICS check.

Yes, you can add more firearms to same 4473 NICS "proceed", but there's a klinker. You may add as many firearms as you like to the same 4473 form after you sign and date it, as long as the dealer has not yet signed it. Once the dealer signs the 4473 form it's locked in and you must repeat the process on a new 4473 form to purchase additional guns. That info is printed in the 4473 instructions....back page...You guys read all that each time you fill out a 4473, don't you??...
I don't think the NICS "proceed" max time limit is stated on the 4473 form and the form appears to be open ended for pickup after NICS approval, but as I recall, the ATF office told me it was good for 30 days from date of call in to the date the gun was picked up. I've never had anyone wait more than a week before pickup so it's never been a problem. That was one of the first questions I had way back when they first implemented NICS, so you may want to call ATF to verify it's still 30 days. They have been known to make reg changes that make little sense...
That's how the federal regs work. Some states may be more restrictive.
