Recently purchased one of the police trade (NPD) 3953 pistols from the big auction site. Overall it's in really nice shape and I think I am really going to like it. Searched some sight makers' sites to see if I could find a replacement front site...no luck, so far. Can any of the Third Gen affectionados here recommend a good choice and source?

Novaks makes night sights that are almost identical to the sights that come on the 39XX series guns. If you only want a front night sight check Brownells. Regards 18DAI

I like the Trijicon SA24's as well, either as a complete sight set or just using the SA24 front sight with the factory rear sight. Contacting Trijicon directly is a good idea for current production sights, as some vendors will sell older sights with less life left in them. The last 2 digits on the sight stamp is the year of production, normally you'll get 12 years of glow from then.

I have Trijicon SA08's on my 3953 as I don't care for the sloping SA24's. Plus the Novak sight picture never thrilled me. You can also buy 6900 series Meprolights on Amazon for far less money, about $45 less. Another option is to buy a Meprolight 6900 series front from Optics Planet and a LPA plain adjustable rear. Finally you can just get your old night sights relamped by Trijicon. That would be the cheapest. But if you have an N.P.D. gun it probably does not have night sights. I will post a pic of my SA08's tomorrow for you.

By the way any Novak cut sights for a 3913, 3914, 6904, 6906, 6946, etc. will work just fine on your 3953.

NOT Meprolight for the compacts. I have them on my pre rail 3913TW and they shoot consistently low. It's not me, as it didn't do that with the original sights. I guess they work on the full size 3rd Gens, but definitely not with the compacts.

I had a full size that came with a set of Meprolight. Yes they are a cheaper option worth considering. But, first thing I did was remove them and slapped on a set of factory Novaks. I didn't even use them, still in my bin drawer if someone is interested. I prefer the Novaks, three dot or current Trijicon night sights with the white perimeter work great. To me, it doesn't get any better then the profile and sighting the Novaks provide.

Took me longer than planned but here are my Trijicon SA08's. My preferred sight on S&W 3rd Gens. The tritium is very bright and the white ring around the front sight is clearly larger than the rear rings making it fast to pick up. They went on nice and easy with my universal sight tool.

Thanks for the photo. I am shopping sights for my 3913

Ahh all you youngsters. My aged gunfighter eyes result in the 3 dots blur ing into one gob.
I went with Ashley express
24 7 big dots. All better now.

Here is another way to go: There is a licensee of Trijicon in the next little town to them by the name of "ToolTech Gunsmithing". They do most all of Trijicon's required re-lamping. If you want to keep the sights you have just send your slide to ToolTech and they will re-lamp it at a reasonable cost. Their phone number is: 248.628.1811 . Don't bother to go to their web site because it is in the middle of being revised and is all but unusable. Also it is a great chance to get the front sight in one color and the two rear dots in another. I never could figure out why it is the usual practice to make all three dots the same color. ......

+1 on the XS 24/7 big dot on a self defense weapon....makes point shooting less of a challenge;).......................................at least for me:D

I purchased a NPD 3953 police trade in from an auction site.... It came with a Meprolite front night sight installed & a unmarked rear night sight...
These were dim as received... I purchased a front night sight from Brownells & installed it using a dead blow hammer and a brass drift punch....
It took some time & effort- but I was able to remove & install the sight without marring the finish in any way...
