Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 review

So today I installed the scope and took it to the range. I had clay discs on rocks at 100, 150, and 200. Sighting the scope in was easy 4 rounds down range and the scope was set and zeroed at 100 the bdc is one of the best I've seen being very accurate and easy to use. With the bdc being hallow circles you can easily set it on your target and shoot. The sun was at my back and although the sight is not luminated this is some of the best glass on a scope I've seen and it was very clear even with the sun moving over head all day. I will say at 9 power the sight starts to was out and its on my AR so I won't use the nine power. I am very pleased with the purchase.
Oh by the way when it says constant 3.5 inch eye relief it means it.

Did you use their online program "SpotOn" for the BDC ?

I've been shooting (excuse the pun) Nikon cameras for years so I trust that their optics are top notch. They're one of the few camera companies that manufacture their own glass. I only wish that they offered a 6-20x or 6-24x in their Pro Staff of Buckmasters lines. For that magnification you have to step up to their Monarch line which is a lot more $$$.

Scott, I have the center fire version on my 10/22. At 9x it is clear and very sharp. You might want to contact Nikon if yours isn't. Also, the dioptic adjustment is more critical at higher magnifications. Nikons should focus excellently at ALL magnifications.

Scotty...it is a good review of the Scope....at this time you have had 119 people read it, its not always the number of comments, but the number of readers that receive the information you are passing on. Nikon is great stuff, my Dad swears by them, it is hard to convince the Chief Financial Officer in my house to spend that much money on a Scope. Maybe someday I will convince her to let me but when I shoot as well as I do with what I have she doesnt see the need for an upgrade. LOL

I'm a big fan of the PROSTAFF 3-9 myself and use the Rimfire version on my Ruger 10/22. Agree, with one on the number of readers you have had regarding your post.
As always, any Nikon related question's or issues, pass them along to me and I'll do my best to help you out. BH, I sent your suggestion on to the powers that be, you never know, but if you don't ask you won't get....
We've ended up with more then one product because you guys asked for it. In fact the newest is coming out in Aug., the M-308 Scope, dialed out to 800 yards! Great MONARCH glass!

Well the bdc works great and no I didn't use the website. I just put what ever I was shooting at 200 yards in h bdc circle and it hit. I was plinking at 200 easy.

bman940....what barrel is that on your 10-22? I have seen barrels with the "hammer forged" stamping before but not on a 10-22.

One, It is a heavy target barrel. That is the exact way it came from Ruger.
I have had it probably 12 + years I think. Love it. Have not seen another one like it. Every time I go to the range someone asks me if I built it myself, and they all love the look of the barrel. It's one heck of a shooter too!

Bart, I have the 10-22 International, I really love the rifle but I dont think the stock would allow me that barrel. My Marlin 60 is way more accurate than my 10-22 both with stock barrels, but I would have to have an original contour and length barrel to replace it with and I would hate to devalue my International they kinda seem like rare beasts....I really like your rifle by the way! Since this pic I have changed the scope to a 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner, this scope was an experiment that did not work at all....too much scope couldnt get it to sight in....LOL

That is a gorgeous rifle, I agree, do not do anything that will take away from it's original condition. Absolutely gorgeous stock.

With the prostaff 3-9, at what range would you need more than 3-9 ?

it depends on the size of your target, try a 3" target at 200 yards! or a prairie dog at over 150

Well I'm shooting clay target discs with it at 150 and 180 yards no problem. Those discs are a pretty small target

That is very true, I didnt think about it, I originally put a 3-9x40 on my sport (Bushnell) it worked but my old eyes wanted a little more magnification because my reticles were covering up the prairie dogs at the distances I was able to shoot. More magnification led to being able to place shots in specific areas of my targets. This is all my opinion, have yet to try clays!
