I would like to hear from other New Jerseyans who currently have pending handgun purchase permit applications. When did you submit the paperwork, and how long did it take to get your permit? Or, are you still waiting? I'd like to especially hear from those who have applied for permits post-Newtown Conn.
Here's what I go through. I live in a rural portion of NJ that has no local law enforcement agency. We have to deal with the State Police for any firearm permits, ID cards, etc.
Last October I applied for a few handgun purchase permits (and form of register, it states that right on the permit). I'm still waiting for my permits....Almost 4 months and no news. Try calling them up and ask for assistance! No help at all, no surprise there. This is not because it's my first permit either. Been living here since '89, and it has always been this way.
So, I'd like to hear from others in this state and their wait times. It would seem that it should be pretty much the same time state-wide but I don't think it is.
To those who don't live in NJ, let this be a warning...It's coming to your state also!

Having applied now in 2 towns, East Brunswick = 121 days for 3 P2Ps and Monroe =35 days for 3 P2Ps the first time and 28 days the last time around November of last year but with no extensions.
I have heard that the 2 officers handling permits in Monroe is backed up with a flood of P2Ps requests and is now telling applicants to expect up to 4 to 5 months wait.
I would call every week to politely ask if there is anything you need to provide in order to speed up the process and if no answer make an appointment with the CLEO and then the Mayor. Keep a copy and dates of any and all contacts and letters/Emails. It may not help but it tells them that you're not about to lay back and just wait silently while they violate the law.

I'm bringing this one back from the dead.

I'm in Gibbstown, Gloucester County. I submitted the forms for two P2P's on January 20th 2017, and just got the call from my PD that they were in today. That's 20 days, by my count.

Conversely, my father in-law, who just retired and wants to get back into shooting after 30 years, submitted the forms to replace his FID card at the Red Lion PD. I think that was in September/October, still no word.

NJ Wait Time

Unfortunately the maximum seven day wait time was done away with in the courts several years ago. NJ put the blame on the FBI so there is no standard to go by. When I lived in NJ I could walk into the PD and walk out with the permit. When the Chief changed so did the procedure. Basically, you are at the mercy of the PD.
PS I moved to Virginia after retirement and enjoy the freedom; show two IDs, do the NICS check and leave with the handgun. It is great living in America, NJ should become a part of it.
