What are we all thinking about the NJ initiatives and the chance they have to pass the NJ senate, then on to the courts?

(A5030) Require people who buy guns in New jersey to renew their purchaser ID card every four years and show proof of taking a course on safe handling and storage of firearms. Currently, purchaser ID cards are valid indefinitely. It would also require people who inherit guns to get a purchaser ID card.
(A1280) Ban the future sales of .50 caliber guns in the state and require current owners of them to register them and pay a $50 fee. Additionally, if someone who has a .50 caliber firearm they can not be passed down to heirs after they die. It would need to be sold or rendered inoperable.
(A6218) Amend the state’s public nuisance laws to prohibit the gun industry from endangering the safety or health of the public through its sale, manufacturing, importing, or marketing of guns. Officials say 80% of guns used in crimes in New Jersey come from out of state.
(A5647) Require gun owners in the state to store firearms in a lockbox or safe.
(A5787) Mandate firearm manufacturers to, within a year, incorporate micro-stamping technology into new handguns sold in New Jersey to provide law enforcement with a tool to quickly link firearm cartridge casings found at the scene of a crime to a specific firearm, without having to recover the firearm itself.
(A1292) Require ammunition manufacturers and dealers to keep a detailed electronic record of sales and report them to the State Police.
(A3686) Require gun owners who move to New Jersey to obtain a firearm purchaser ID card and register their guns within 60 days.
(AR277) Reconvene a “States for Gun Safety” summit in the state.

Is this in regards to the NJ Legislatures proposal to have LGS maintain a registry of ammo purchases? If so, CA got away with it, so…….

Way back when I lived in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey (some 40 years ago) your name and address went into a record book every time you bought ammo there. Resulted in a huge mountain of paperwork that nobody had the funds to look thru and never solved a case. I believe they dropped it.

The last one, AR277 has the best chance. It will be held in Atlantic City, at the best resorts. Lots of free drinks, gambling, time on the beach, and they won't accomplish a thing that is worthwhile.
All NJ residents need to belong to one of the pro-2nd amendment groups, contact their representatives, and get out and vote.

A1280; Ban the sales of .50 caliber guns. Does that include include my .50 caliber Hawken rifle, a Springfield .50-70 trapdoor, and a .50-90 Sharps Buffalo Gun?

A5787; Require microstamping on guns. Voodoo technology.

I think I have to agree with post #4 above.
I'm just glad I live in PA. All in all it's pretty much a pro-hunting & pro-firearm state; hasn't changed much in my lifetime except the age of computers has changed the wait time for a handgun purchase from 1 1/2 weeks to 1 1/2 hours, tops.
News media has ruined a lot of peoples hopes & dreams. Letters to state reps, perhaps with many verified signatures, could perhaps sway a rep one way or another, but it doesn't hurt to give them some flattery for the great jobs they're doing. Maybe don't use "non-printable" (here) language and be nice, which I have trouble with except for dialog with our elected officials. I think it's called "being tactful."
Good luck with all your endeavors over there in Jersey. God Bless.

Currently, I live in NJ, and I am horrified at the proposals. Taking all of these proposed changes in concert, it will make aggressive crime safer for the criminals and make it easier to disqualify individuals from exercising their 2A rights. The narrative offered in the original post is about 95% accurate, but it is worse. It is my understanding that not only is the progressive wing seeking to introduce a firearms storage mandate, there is an effort to mandate separate storage for ammunition, which could undermine the Heller decision and make any form of armed response to an intrusion into one's home a felony and remove another 2A household.

A5030 - NJFID renewal, this had been tried before and it failed. With the controlling party having lost a number of seats in the legislature, I don't envision it being successful this time around.
A1280 - it is my understanding, this bill is aimed at banning 50 cal centerfire arms, but the way it is being represented will probably motivate the 50 cal black powder hunters and owners to rally against it. When this was proposed at the start of the governor's first term, it was worded to ban handguns weighing over 50 ounces, which would have banned virtually every X framed Smith.
A6218 - this is basically a ban on any NEW firearm in the state. Not just sale of new guns, but a prohibition on someone moving into the state from bringing their lawful possessions with them. (This is my interpretation, and NJ county prosecutors tend to initiate charges before "the hat is dropped ", don't look for any degree of logic.)
A5647 - this bill I believe not only mandates limited access storage of firearms, but also mandates similar storage requirements for ammunition, which will essentially gut the concept of armed self defense in the home. This bill could probably pass, and result in a lengthy challenge as a violation of Heller.
A5787 - this mandates technology (micro stamping) which (to the best of my knowledge) does not yet exist. Since many members of the legislature listen to the unicorn chasers, it will probably be passed and implemented.
A1292 - the electronic ammo registry will most likely pass. While I reload the majority of my ammo, and tend to purchase some factory ammo online or out of state, I can't say whether the paper registry still exists. In the past 9 months I have made 2 in-state ammo purchases, where only 1 business recorded the information. I see this as potential harrassment designed to drive away gun owners. For example, if I were required to use factory ammo for all of my competitions, I would consume close to 100 rounds of rifle ammo and close 500 rounds of handgun ammo a month. With mandated purchase reporting to the State Police, I would probably have a trooper living in front of my home.
A3686 - I can envision mandating NJFID cards with 60 day registration requirements passing, because it will "look good". The problem will be consistent enforcement. A similar requirement exists with respect to vehicle registration and insurance, and I've seen people living here for years flaunting out of state registrations. Another problem with enforcement is that areas that are not NJSP jurisdictions are still taking in excess of 60 days (more like greater than 6 months) to issue the NJFID. In the meantime, it would be another rarely enforced law on the books, used against someone in order to build charges when they are caught violating a law.
AR277 - I see this passing quickly. This is being referred to as the re-education camp bill, and the concern is that the "gun safety summit" will be indoctrination via the Bloomberg, Brady, Griffith, and other anti-gun organizations which tend to know nothing about gun safety beyond demonizing firearms. This is supported by viewing the tail end of the governor's presentation when he thanks each organization by name.

While I hope otherwise, I feel that the majority of these bills will pass, because it will cost the 2A community bundles of money to fight the legislation in the courts over a period of years before the cases could even be eligible to be heard in a federal court!

(A5647) Require gun owners in the state to store firearms in a lockbox or safe.

This proposed law is hard to understand
According to proposed Section 3.a:

Except as otherwise provided in this section, a
legal owner of a firearm shall:
(1) store or secure a firearm that is not in use at a premises
under the owner’s control, unloaded, in a gun safe or securely
locked box or container;

But what does it mean to have a firearm "in use at a premises
under the owner’s control." Under Heller, "in use" must include unlocked and in the night stand while you are asleep. But what about when you leave the house, must you lock it up each time you leave the house to go to the store. Must you lock it up when you take the garbage to the curb or walk your dog? What about keeping a loaded rifle in the corner of both the upstairs bedroom and the downstairs living room? What about the gun in the nightstand when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom?

IMHO, any of the laws proposed in the OP could pass in New Jersey, but at this point in time it seems that the Legislature does not have the stomach to actually pass any firearm legislation with teeth.

Of course, common sense would dictate locking up your guns at home when you are away from them long enough that someone you do not intend could easily get to them.

So, if I was writing the law, I would have it say that a person is civilly liable, and possibly criminally negligent, if a gun is used in a crime or to cause injury when it was not stored reasonably under the circumstances.

There is no doubt in my mind that these bills will pass. Without bashing NJ, where my late, lamented mother was born, and my twin brother and half his family live, and some of our cousins, I can state unequivocally that the political wing that runs that state will get these passed and the governor will sign them - and why?

To get ahead of what is likely to be a far reaching Supreme Court decision in 2022 that I think will go against the State of New York and expand gun rights in a multiplicity of ways and in a number of jurisdictions so NJ has taken aim at that case (no pun intended) to create restrictions that are not affected by the upcoming SCOTUS decision. That's the motive that I see.

There are not enough pro-gun people in NJ to stop this - I'd like to be wrong about that but I think it's a lost cause in NJ.

It was the same here in Indiana. My favorite dealer referred to the log as “the joke book”. Same story with the ridiculous “daylight saving” time farce. Now we Hoosiers, all these years later, are suffering the same absurd playing around with the clock, as if it actually accomplishes something, just because they are too stubborn and too lazy to take action to put the state in the central time zone, where probably we should be - and quit it with the silly DST stuff. We had it, got rid of it, and now we’ve got it again.

In any case, nowadays, with computers and all, I wouldn’t be surprised to see ammunition sales registries popping up almost anywhere that anti-gun voters in the “urban sprawl” outnumber the countrysiders.

Gun Ban Package Stalls In Assembly For Now

NJ ASSEMBLY POSTPONES ACTION
ON MURPHY GUN BAN PACKAGE

Keep Contacting Assembly Members Until January 10

December 20, 2021. In response to a massive outcry from gun owners against Gov. Murphy's gun ban proposals, the NJ Assembly today unexpectedly took no action on the major components of the anti-Second Amendment bill package. Instead, the Speaker of the Assembly issued a statement indicating that he intends "to consider re-posting a comprehensive package in January."

This means that the bills could still come up for a vote on the final day the Assembly is scheduled to meet this session (January 10, 2022). But it also means that gun owners' collective outcry has led to serious questions among Assembly members -- enough to cause the major components of the bill package to be "held" right now.

Please keep contacting all members of the Assembly until January 10 and tell them to VOTE NO on the current package of gun bills. Not one of these bills does ANYTHING to punish violent gun crime, and the only thing ALL of them do is interfere with the Second Amendment rights of honest citizens who are not the problem.

Please go the distance and keep contacting Assembly members until January 10.

This what happened in ca,the micro stamping is just a way to cut out any new guns and then they will start to eliminate the roster of grandfatherd guns,In ca we eliminate 2 guns on the roster for every new gun added.Good luck once the get their foot in the door it's all downhill hill after thar
