Trying to give a 1911 to a friend in NJ. Told him get a permit and I'll ship it to an FFL. He applied for a permit at the end of January. Still nothing. He calls his local PD and it's always "oh, only one officer handles permits and he's not in" or "hmmm we'll have to check and get back to you."

Such nonsense. 30 days my [well I don't know what to type because it will violate the rules]

In Erie Co NY it was easily a yr or longer to get one for several years. During Covid they caught up and got it down to a super fast 6 months. It’s ironic that in a State that wants to restrict your 2nd amendment rights , the men and women who work in Pistol Permit Dept are great.

I can’t help with JOISEY. However, if they are like Ling Island NewYorkistan maybe a year plus.

On Loing Iland, Suffolk County in particular, if you live in the 5 western towns your pistol license is issued and maintained by the Suffolk County Police Department. In the 5 eastern towns the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is the issuing agency.
The five western towns are more populated and requests skyrocketed at the beginning and through the China Virus, meaning an 18-24 months wait! The Sheriff’s is currently running 6-8 months.

At either agency, a purchase document is instantaneous, so long as you are duly licensed.

My lifelong friend, who lived in New Jersey, asked me to be his character reference on his application to purchase a handgun there.

At the time, he was manager of the enormous Verrazano Narrows Bridge, with the permission to carry while working, and held the keys to the on-site armory, full of weapons.

The pistol purchasing permit of NJ is a farce. A lawyer friend of mine would bring the police chief's secretary Mary K products and would walk out with the permit. However, if you are not connected it will take a very long time; it's a drawn out, unnecessary process.

Total BS - It is all done now electronically through the NJ state police. The local departments have little or no involvement in the process anymore. Since late last year, all pistol permits are electronically issued no paper. If you friend has done his part, electronic fingerprints and application the process is rather quick. Only the Firearms ID Purchaser's Card (Rifles and Shotguns) is issued locally. He will need that card to purchase pistol ammunition.

It all depends on the Township you live in. State statute reads should be issued in 30 days but usually never happens. I live in northern NJ which is gun friendly and permit time is 2wks. to 2 months usually.
Carry permits are never issued in NJ unless you are retired law enforcement. I got my carry permit in 10 days.
Most of NJ is not gun friendly.

Move to PA--no problems. CCW permit about 30 days only $20.00

It used to be shorter for non residents, maybe still. Back when it was done through the mail I used Denny Nau in Centre County.

Just about everyone used him because he allowed the process by mail in.

Than PA required a personal visit, so I drove to Scranton. In and out in 10 minutes after showing my NY carry permit.

The Sheriff even came out of his office to welcome all the NYers waiting to get PA licenses in his County. :D Nice guy.

Now that PA has reciprocity with NC I don’t feel the need for a PA license.
