While this may belong in the 2nd forum technically, I thought it would get more viewing here.

Not at all and Not to be political, just factual. The NJ State Police NICS unit have been directed to only respond to FAX initiated NICS check. THey are not to respond to phone etc. like they normally do.

Of course there's only 1 fax number and the backlogs and busy signals are horrendous. Dealers are having to try to get faxes thru with major delays. And then of course there's a delay in getting answers back. A nlot of dealers are closing to normal walkin business to only handle 'approved' transfers.

NICS checks that used to take a few minutes are now taking 3 or more days.

And of course there's always the insult to injury thing about having to pay $20 for a free federal service.

The software is the way to go, or should I say the WEB based option. You don't need to talk to or send a fax to anyone. AND it's fast! I guess that way, they don't have to "respond" to anything. Once the info off of the 4473 is enterd and submitted, 20 seconds tops on average.

Wait.....what?

I guess I don't understand. What does the NJ State Police have to do with a Federal background check? Does the NJ State Police have to do the NICS inquiry?

FDLE does it for Florida. Local shop just went online. It is soooo wayyyyy much better!. No more waiting on hold on the phone. Your name just goes in the Que. It's $5.00

I don't know how it is in your state, but here in Nevada it is all done by the Highway Patrol from an office in Carson City. To my knowledge NICS is not administered in each state by the federal government, they just keep the database.

Fax? That's very "cutting-edge" of them. I'm surprised they didn't require submissions by Telex, or smoke signals. Maybe some official's brother-in-law owns a warehouse of the old rolled, heat sensitive fax paper.

Everyone is running behind. NJ os just ....well its NJ. If you live around here you'd understand! :) They are special!!!

I live in SE Pa with 20min drive from Jersey. And i work with walking distance of the state capital, Trenton NJ. Its a whole different world there. Jersey is a "will issue" state but good luck trying. Almost everyone is denied a carry permit. You have to be very important to get one.

Every time i go there i leave my gun and pocket knife at home/work/friend's house. Im even afraid to leave my holster on. With Jersey you never know it might show intent!

Also forgot about hollow point bullets. They are illegal except for hunting. Its something like 5 year prison per HP handgun round. Even armed security has to switch to fmj when doing work in Jersey. I think there are a few exceptions though. Armored car guards and power plant security.

Even their roads are annoying. Sometimes to make a left you make a left at the intersection. Sometimes to make a left you make a right before the intersection and sometimes to make the left you make a right after the intersection

Only thing Jersey is good for is their liquor stores and thats only because Pa liquor stores suck

To answer a couple of the comments.

Governor Christy issued the order to only respond to FAX initiated checks. And yes it is a deliberate attempt to slow things down. He is very much anti-gun.

All NICS checks go thru the State Police here in NJ. And all the dealers up this way are charging $20 for the checks. They used to be $15 but not up this way now.

Online, or phone or whatever will not be responded to, only FAX initiated inquiries are checked.

ANd yes, NJ is near the top of the list for anti-gun states.
And no, I can't move yet. But it's comming soon.

Hmm, me smells something fishy, I just bought an M&P 40c on Wed and waiting for the NICS to come back, only got charged $15. I agree with you PDL, I can't leave yet either, but it's coming. What part of the PRNJ you in, I'm in Bergen County.
