NJ SP NICS to only respond to FAX.

No charges for NCIS checks here in Texas. Also, for the last two guns I bought here, it was mandatory to complete the ATF form on computer. Both dealers where I bought these two guns would accept only computer completion of the forms; they would not accept hand completed forms.

NICS Check

I am at day 14 for my NICS check and nothing yet in the great state of NJ. At gun store a lady picked her handgun up at day 16. Now they are saying 20+ days.?????????? Why do we really need a NICS check again after going through the same check after a handgun permit. As stated on this forum, that it is a money grab at $16.00 for the state. From my understanding NJ is one of eight states that does their own instead of going free with the federal check. So far from putting in the paperwork for handgun permit and NICS check I have waited 85 days and counting.

Took me 18 days for nics for my 686+ a couple of weeks ago. Now I have to wait three weeks till I can even file the nics for my new S&W performance Center 1911 - Why on earth is NJ so screwed up?

I'm in NJ, my FFL in Garfield NJ charges $15.00 for a telephone NICS and it takes a couple minutes. I was in the store on the 21st of Dec. and it was phone in NICS. There is nothing in a web search to indicate any change to fax only. Who the ho ho heck has a fax machine these days? It's a false rumor as far as I can see.
That wouldn't happen to be a place called Meltzers,.... would it? I have fond memories of that place and Mr. Meltzer saying, " Meltzer sings when the cash register rings! ". Just curious.

Its not a false rumor, the state police shut down the phone lines and nics can only be done by fax, but wait it gets worse. Your FFL actually faxes them to a company in Florida that then batches them to NJ State Police.

For the question about why NJ does NICS and Permits, you can blame Christy Whitman. When NICS first came out states could either use NICS or a Permitting system. She decided we needed both.

I like the guy in the recent public hearings in Trenton. He asked them why they don't enforce the 30 day response requirement.

They're making it almost impossible to 'legallly' get a pistol in NJ. Long delays to get the purchase permit, long NICS turnaround, 1 handgun in 30 days, and permits valid for 90 days.

I live in Florida, the FDLE does our checks. It's $5, and usually under 5 minutes if they call it in, they also recently implemented an online check that certain high volume FFL's have access to where they dont even have to speak to a person.

It's worked out very well for us, your state obviously just sucks. Why dont you all sue over this?

It's great once you get past the fact that you've already had a much more thorough vetting to get your LTC in the first place. While not a ridiculous as NY or NJ, MA can be very difficult to get a License To Carry. My town is very good, the towns surrounding me are very difficult. It's all up to the Chief.

That aside, my last purchase a week ago took 20 minutes from the time I asked to look at the pistol until I was walking out with it in my hand (in a bag).

What NJ is doing it a great example of how a bureaucracy can turn the screws legally to make firearms sales difficult. Imagine is some state decided to do the same for ammunition sales.

Same in MA no charge, the holdup is manually filling out the 4473.

Then I give the LGS my pin #, and it is over in less than a minute, off I go.

"Also forgot about hollow point bullets. They are illegal except for hunting. Its something like 5 year prison per HP handgun round. Even armed security has to switch to fmj when doing work in Jersey. I think there are a few exceptions though. Armored car guards and power plant security". quoted from Arik

I guess they are not up on their ballistics, since one of the main things about hollow points is the fact that when they hit the target and spread that makes for a much less chance of them completely going thru the primary target and striking some unintended target.

Common sense doesn't figures into any New Jersey gun laws.
It's a state where even the republicans are very anti-gun.
I live in Pennsylvania but work in the garden state. I always look forwards to crossing the Delaware on my way home to freedom.
They used to have a sign when you entered PA that said "Pennsylvania, where America begins". New Jersey didn't like it. LOL!

Fax? You might as well send it by pigeon. Sounds like you guys aren't raising enough hell with your elected officials, like the Jersey fat boy.
