Bought some 200 gr Hornady XTP ( These days a rare find ) Opened up box and there is no crimping groove ! Should I take them back ? How can I load these ,can I crimp them and watch for Shell distortion ? or take them back for a refund ? Loading these in my Newly acquired X frame in 460 .

Good for light loads

I'm returning them tomorrow morning Thanks...

Hopefully they'll take them back. The LGS around here won't take items like that back, even if it's unopened!? :mad:

If they won't accept them, you can still use them for "light" loads. Hornady shows a max of 1100fps for these. Pick an appropriate powder/load & seat them deep enough to (barely) crimp the case over the shoulder. You'll have plenty of space in the 460 case & not have issues with this short bullet. I've done this in my 454 Casull for plinking loads.

Like I said in the thread on another forum you posted on, those bullets are probably meant for loading 45 ACP ammo, not 460 Magnum ammo.

Hornady makes an XTP bullet and an XTP MAG bullet, the MAG bullets are meant for loading the 454 Casull and .460 Magnum but not the others. Usually, bullets without a crimp groove are meant for semi-auto loading, not revolver ammo. The exceptions are plated bullets which don't have crimp grooves but they are also not meant for high pressure cartridges because they can't withstand the higher pressures/velocities. Also, 200gr bullets are on the light side for loading the .460 Magnum.

That's not entirely true, my .38/.357 158 grn lrn bullets from zero have no crimp grooves.

Hornady will usually have w/c on the box which means..... with cannelure.

Lead bullets do not need a "can" but it is nice for medium to heavy loads and those "Type" of bullets usually come with one. LRN for light target work are usually optional.

Sorry you got the wrong type bullet, at best a light target load can be used.
Good luck with those what ever happens.

Rule 3;
I would post on the lounge section but it would be on page 4 in 3 days as fast as that thing moves...... Yes, I watched men fall to their deaths, loose arms and legs or just toes or fingers.
My first year I saw FOUR cranes tip over and one building collapse when the guy cables broke.
On one job I jumped from a bar joist that we just carried out that was not yet welded into place and only 4" wide that started to "Roll", over five feet to the next joist we just carried out and kept walking to the ledger wall to rest. I was glad not to have fallen twenty feet, just because 15 guys were pouring a "Mud" (cement) floor right under me. They all yelled and gave me a big thumbs up.
Lots of good and bad times.......Fell one time 18 feet head first with a "Full structural belt" and slapped the ground with my right hand before contact (Judo class) .Nothing broken but the aluminum ladder, got up and told the two foreman I was ready to get back to work.
The man upstairs was looking over me that day.

OMG. Off topic but you did that work? Walking on the beams so very very high up there?:eek:

It makes my legs weak just thinking or watching it on TV

Gota have something special to do that.:) Is it true that Native Americans or many of them have no fear of heights? I saw guys working and painting the Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay. Could not watch !!

One of the best show I ever saw was on PBS or something about building the Empire State Building in NY. The speed at which it was done and how they did it was amazing. The original "stuff" is still in use today.

I guess you missed the part where I said "usually". There are always exceptions, that is if those Zero bullets really have no crimp groove. The last Zero lead bullets I saw had a crimp groove even though it wasn't very deep. They are swaged bullets after all and can be easily distorted so you don't want to crimp them too deeply.

As scarce as reloading components seem to be in some areas, you could probably swap or sell them to another member of your gun club.

not too long ago I had a 460 to work up loads for and a pile of cast 230 grain slugs with no crimp grooves.

My solution was a load of Unique, per 45 Winchester Magnum data (Wildey pistol) as found in the hornady manual.
start at or near the max load for the win mag ... seemed a good starting point in the 460.
the end result was a rather enjoyable and accurate reduced load.

Bluedot;

With everyone cutting cost to the bone and getting us to pay higher prices for the components................in order to make a profit.

I am willing to say they might even do away with a picture of the bullet on the box. That would be a bad day for us the have Bi-focals.
