Hi wonderful S&W shooters. First let me say i'm not much of a S&W guy (don't bash me too bad) or revolver guy. I have nothing against them, i just never got into them starting out and remained that way with so many options out there. I did however pick up a 686 from an older gentleman a while back. I'm leaning toward selling it, possibly on GB. I'm not asking what's it's worth as i know that is a big no-no. What information i'm looking for is, what specifics do i need to supply to make sure a potential buyer knows what i have and if it is what he is looking for and to get the proper value/bids? Things i do know about (which are the easy ones) are......Stainless steel finish .357 mag, with a 8 3/8" barrel and adjustable rear sight. Model 686 no dash (pretty sure as it's not marked with a dash number), and 6 shot cylinder. The seller said he bought it new in the 80's and was the original owner. He gave me 2 boxes of ammo (one .38 special and one .357 mag) that he claims he bought with the gun and only ones he shot from it and both boxes had rounds left in them. I have the original gun box it came in, which is aged a bit naturally, and has the tools in it. Anything i'm missing? I've seen something about number of frame screws. Does that apply or would they know that already with the model? Any help would be appreciated. Hafiii

Pics are a must. The description you gave should suffice. You may even want to supply the serial number or at least the first five digits, for example ABC12xx. Other than that, start it out as a penny auction and see where it goes. 8 3/8" 686's are not that common and probably the least desirable barrel length. But, ya never know. I know we would like to see pics. If you decide on a price, post it here first, on the forum classifieds. Someone here might like to own it!

Thanks guys. Had a couple requests for a pic. Loading one now, see if it comes thru ok. Serial number is ACK38xx. Will that give us a born on date? My plan was to list it on GB with a low starting bid and figured a piece like this will get the proper going price if i list it correctly. Saves me from trying to figure out a fair value to ask for it. My main concern was listing it right so i did get that fair price. I do not see an "M" stamped anywhere but there is an "S" stamped inside where the ejector rod swings into the underside of the barrel, if that helps. Thanks again

Saw one just like it at the Wanenmacher in Tulsa a couple months ago. 686 no dash, 8 & whatever fraction barrel, but no box, no papers.

The ACK sn prefix would make it 1983 production, which indeed makes it a "no dash". There's no harm in stating all the specs on the gun in your ad, but some of the details you list would be known to most buyers. For example, all 686s are stainless steel (not stainless steel "finish") - the equivalent blued gun is the Model 586 - and all have adjustable rear sights - the fixed sight variation is the Model 681. All no dash 686s were 6-shot. Frame screws are not important -AFAIK all recent revolvers, certainly all 686s, use the so-called 3-screw frame.
The "M" stamp in the frame cutout (where you find the model number) will be important to some buyers (both ways - some will want it, some not) as it indicates if the gun has been returned to the factory to correct a firing pin issue that affects the no dash and -1 guns. It's probably less important for a long-barreled gun that will likely not be used for SD, or at least not carried for that purpose. S&W will still do the fix at no cost, but it does involve the hassle of sending the gun back to them even though they'll pay the shipping both ways.
Good photos are always important for a quick sale, including photos of any accessories. Some sellers like to include a photo with the stocks removed, but that's probably less important for a stainless gun.

I think you should take it to the range and shoot it first then make a decision on whether or not you want to sell it. You may be surprised!
