Saw the sign last night. My permit specifically prohibits carry where signage exists. Here's my letter to Safeway:

I hold a Sacramento County Concealed Weapons Permit. My wife and I shop at your Carmichael store and yesterday noticed a "No Firearms" sign at the store. I understand what this policy is designed to do, and I also know how misguided it is. As a permit holder, my background was thoroughly checked out. I am a law-abiding citizen with a spotless record. The weapon I carry daily to protect myself and my family is no danger to anyone. My wife an I spend between $1000-$1250 monthly with Safeway, but where I buy groceries is far less important to me than the ability to protect my family. So I will be shopping elsewhere in the future. And the people who ignore the law, and carry guns without permits? They're called criminals and they'll ignore your sign as well. Sincerely, Wuluf. (ok, they got my actual name)

Excellent letter in reply to a stupid sign. Good for you.

My guess is that it may be a “Store Manager” imposed policy, probably due to CA’s recent issuing of CCW’s in a lot of areas and the related publicity. I’ve been shopping at Safeway stores here in Arizona for well over 10 years and I’ve never encountered an anti-2A sign. Or it could be the result of the recent acquisition of Safeway by Albertsons, but I also have Albertsons here in AZ and no anti signs.

I live in Chicago. Signs are starting to appear hear also. I agree with your comments, 100%. Good post.
In Illinois, the law is very specific. The sign must be the official sign, of a specific size, 4x6 in as exactly described in the law. If a shop owner posts a non compliant sign I am not sure of my status if I ignore it. One way or the other I get his intent and will shop elsewhere.

Try this also. A local theater had the same sign. I asked to speak to the manager and by my surprise he met with me. I too explained how myself and every other law abiding CCW members were not the ones breaking the laws but we might be the people saving his and others lives. He said it was not his policy but corporate. I told him to give corporate my message and that I would be doing business somewhere I felt more safe. I also told him I was going to write down his name and the date that we talked. I told him that if God forbid a shooting happened at his theater and there was no one to stop it, I would be there and tell the press and the victims that you knew of the consequences but you refused to change your policy. I told him I would urge the victims to sue and that I would be a witness.
He didn't know what to say. I left without him saying anything more. About a month later a friend asked about which theater we go to. I told him not to go to this one because of their policy. He called me a couple of days later and said he went there and did not see a sign. Curiosity got the best of me and I went down there. The sign was gone! God does work miracles.

Good ideas expressed here .The more people that respond in such a manner the less signs will be posted. Thanks for your efforts.

Goodonya for your response.

Maybe time to dust this off again. I may have gotten the idea on this forum.

Print, turn on long access, print again. Trim at marks. Yields ten two sided "not calling" cards. (Trimming by hand can be a bee eye double itch,)

safety before signs. concealed means concealed too.

My favorite hardware store was owned by an avid hunter. The front end manager was a rear end pain, who hated anything hunting or gun related. I am sorry she passed from cancer. But her legacy of a international 'no guns allowed sign' was improperly posted, on the Bulletin board, which happened to be right above the trash can. While I was shopping there a few years ago, it fell into the trash and has not been replaced. Mayhem didn't befall the neighborhood. They are no longer the only business that was posted for a mile in each direction. A long time ago, I ask the owner why he allowed his store to be posted, he said it was the front end manager's decision, but mentioned the signage wasn't within the law and couldn't/wouldn't be enforced. Some Management systems just don't make sense. Ivan

Are you sure the official size of the sign must only be 4" x 6"? I'm sitting here looking at a 3x5 card and am quite amused but then again we are talking about Illinois.Must not be in their budget.

I am in the process of opening a new gun shop close to where I live. Someone asked me last night if I was going to allow folks to carry in the store. I replied in the affirmative as long as it remained holstered and only store staff would clear weapons if there was a reason to. I think that is reasonable? It surprises me the number of shooting sports retailers which do not allow carry in the store and yet they want the benefits of the sales. I know that's different than the OP's grocery store not allowing carry but it happens in shooting sports retail stores as well.

BigG-n-Tn, The Sporting goods store Galians was purchased by the Limited Brands. That whole thing was founded by Billionaire Les Wexner and his HQ is here in Central Ohio. He is a gun collector and avid trap shooter. Ohio didn't have ccw when he was involved with it, but the store closet to his office Stocked $130,000 shotguns! and was very gun friendly. The chain was sold to Dick's and became a golf and T-shirt store. It may have a gun department, but the stores are unfriendly to the very idea of firearms and ammunition. Ivan

Writing to their Corporate offices and advising them that you will take your business elsewhere is one of the best things we as firearms owners can do. They must know that there are ramifications for their actions.
