I am retired and do a lot of cooking especially this time of year when the wife is out working in her gardens. Tonight's menu was Country Ham, Fried Apples, Biscuits, Fried Eggs and Grits.

Being a southern boy I love my grits but rarely cook them at home. Always order when eating breakfast out. Got everything ready to cook and asked my wife if we had grits. Yes in the canister in the back of the cabinet. Got everything going and found the grits, measured out the proper amount and they looked a little yellow. Decided to check the date of the package. "Best before August 16, 2010!!!" Needless to say did not have the grits.

The rest of the meal was yummy. Breakfast for Dinner is a real treat in our house.

Stay Safe,
VaTom

I agree that breakfast for dinner is awesome and I love grits with all the trimmings . [emoji2] I’m out west currently but I was born in NC and grew up eating most of the good foods of the south. I get weird looks sometimes talking about loving grits and banana sandwiches.

As I'm a Yankee, don't know much about grits. Would like to give them a try. Good brands and suggestion for cooking?

I have grits most every morning. Hard to beat with a just a dab of butter or margarine, a little salt, a lot of coarse ground black pepper, extra sharp cheddar or blue cheese, tabasco, and enough green chiles to cover.

I buy Albers Quick grits. There are a variety of ways to eat them, some just add sugar , I prefer to eat them how I was raised, just add salt and butter to taste.

Grits is a "neutral food"... unseasoned, it has very little taste.
You can made them any flavor you like by adding different things... cheese, syrups, eggs, gravy, salt, sugar, grease, etc.

I've had country ham many times that was a year or two old.. don't think I've had grits that was 10 years old.

Anything that need a stick of butter and a cup of sugar to be edible, had better be a cake.. no grits for this Yankee, thank you very much.
Yeah, I never understood grits either. As much as I worked down South (which was a lot) and as much as I tried to get used to grits, it just never happened. :( On the other hand, I consider myself a world class gourmet on the subject of hash brown potatoes! :D :D :D

Mmmm...I haven’t had good grits in a long while. Mom was originally from SC, so they were a staple in our household. She could integrate them into just about any meal.

Grits are a staple around here. Prior to a month ago it was a once a week occurrence. Now that I am home every morning so every 2 or 3 days grits are on the stove. I am currently using grits from a grist mill in north GA. I have no problems paying two to three times what a pound of old fashioned Quaker cost.

I never had grits as a kid in WV. But boy, did we have cornmeal mush. If you can name a way to fix mush, we had it, and more. Had so much I just refused to eat cornmeal mush today.
But spending some military time in the south I did eat grits. Grits with sugar and butter, grits with butter. Shrimp and grits, fried grits with syrup.

Went to a newer breakfast/lunch place last year. Some of their stuff pretty good. Everything they make is a fancied up version. Well this time I got their grits with my breakfast. I sent them back and got spuds. I don't know what they were but they weren't grits. I'm guessing they were some yankeefied version that tasted more like heavy cream than grits and no texture at all, bleh! I'm thinking they were designed for yankee snowbirds that wouldn't actually like grits.
