Seeking some info on the M27-3 I've been offered. Tried the search function without success and skimmed the last dozen pages or so but found only one reference to a 27-3 and that was a commerative. The one I am looking at has a 4" barrel, red ramp, white outline, football target grips and target trigger/hammer in the mahogany case. Pistol finish is excellent but the lining of the case is gone.

So, what's the story with these? Just like a little more knowledge before I reach for the wallet. Asking price is $475. Any help is much appreciated. Just to say thanks....I'll throw in a little S&W porn....

4" 27-3

If it is origional, correct and complete, in the presentation case and in good condition a 4" 27-3 is a gift at that price.

However, the round butt gun you show isn't a 27-3 I don't think unless it's been altered.

It's true that some folks will look down their noses at all N-Frame "Dash 3's", but I find them to be better shooters than the average, later -2's.

That and given the fact that so many Pre-27's, and 27-2's were built, they get alot more collector attention.

I'd take another look at the gun you photographed to verify what it is...

Good Luck and let us know how you made out...

Drew

27-3's are actually kind of uncommon, although collectors tend to prefer the older, more common -2's because of the pinned barrel and recessed chambers. I all actuallity they are just as good, if not better in some cases, than -2s and earlier as shooters. Some don't like the extra care one must take in cleaning the recessed chambers. AFAIK all 27-3s (and earlier) are square butt guns so unless the one in the pic has been modified, it is not a 27-3. And I'm not even going to mention the flash chromed hammer.

Thanks guys. Helpful info. Sorry that you got the idea the pic was of the M27-3 in question. It is actually of a 3" Lew Horton 624. I always like seeing good photos in posts so I just threw it in. Sorry for the confusion.

I traded into this 27-3 a couple of years ago, and the asking price was a lot more than $475.

skeezix,
Yours looks to be a twin of the one I am considering. Nice pic! Sounds like I'd better jump on it for the price. Only thing....that 4" barrel length has just never "done it" for me. I've owned a number of 27-2's over the years but 3 1/2", 5", 6 1/2" and 8 3/8". Sure wish I "still" had some of those!

There was a beautiful 4 inch nickel 27-2 for sale several years back in the classifieds. It wasn't pinned and it languished for weeks in the classifieds at $ 500. I think if it was P&R it would have been snapped up in a heartbeat. I gave it a good home and think you should do the same at that price.

For that price I would buy it.

That being said, I have never had an interest in 27's except for the earlier 3 1/2 and 5 inch barreled models. The checkered top straps and sights were cool and the original blue and nickel finishes were outstanding, great craftsmanship. But really, if they have 4 or 6 inch barrels on them, spare the extra expense and buy a model 28. Just my opinion.

I own one mod 27-3, a 8 3/8" model. It is ashame that the bluing is worn on it, because it is a great shooter. Yes, it is easier to clean than my other -2's. They are all good. Wish I had some of mine back that were sold/traded.
