A question for our experts: Did non-relieved grips for the square butt N frame ever come checkered WITHOUT a diamond insert?

SCSW shows them with diamonds, but I have a set without diamonds and I'm wondering if they were genuine.
Sorry, no pictures.

Any help would be appreciated.

While there are no impossibilities with S&W, odds are astronomical that any were produced without diamonds. You need to post pics of the front and back side. Stocks from that era would have had black rear washers. Someone could have home checkered an early set of smooth factory grips in the modern non-diamond style.

I remember now seeing a set of non-diamonds that didn't have the football cut. There were a few that made it out of the factory.

I guess yours aren't the only ones, but certainly rare.

This pair is made of Goncalo alves and dates from 1969 to 1974. I believe it was a factory error and should have the relieved area on the left stock panel, but a neat collectible nonetheless.
