Wanting feedback pertaining to the years non relieved smooth target grips were available from the factory. I just acquired a model 29 no dash from 1961 that's wearing a set of them. Was wondering if they could possibly be the original ones.

In the notable threads section of this forum, there is an excellent resource that I think will answer your question plus many others. Under Grips, the thread is named
"Smith & Wesson N Frame Stocks/Grips- A Reference Guide"

I’d bet that S&W wood department still had non-relieved K&N Target stocks laying around and available in 1961 but it would be unusual and very late (being the football relief started 1956ish)
I’d guess that your 29 came with the std. Cokes and somehow got replaced by an earlier pair of stocks.
A letter would probably be the only sure fire way of knowing.
On the positive side, if your grips are in good shape they could be as valuable as cokes and easily swapped.
How about some pics!

The thread recommended is an excellent resource for information on N frame stocks. I don't think non-relieved smooth targets existed in 1961. Your gun probably was shipped with "cokes" such as shown in this "family shot." My no dash is in the middle, third from the top. Shipped January 1959. We would love to see pictures of yours.

Never added pics to a thread on the forum not sure how to do it.

I'd be a little surprised if .44 Mag cartridge cases would even extract completely with non relieved target stocks. The whole point of adding the relief cut on target stocks was for clearance for longer cartridge cases to extract and eject without hitting the wood. Even .22 LR cases have a hard time clearing the non-relieved stocks.

Hit the edit button on a existing post of yours in this thread…..
Scroll to the bottom where in says manage attachment.
You can then attach a picture that you have saved on your computer. Looking forward to seeing your smooth targets, they are probably Rosewood

Very nice!!! As a collector of 1950's engraved .357 Magnums, I am always looking for another set of non-relieved target stocks. If you ever decide you want to swap those for a comparably nice set of Cokes, please let me know, and I'll help you get your gun back to the original factory configurations.:D
